in this paper, optimal distributed control of the time-dependent navier-stokes equations is considered. the control problem involves the minimization of a measure of the distance between the velocity field and a given target velocity field. a mixed numerical method involving a quasi-newton algorithm, a novel calculation of the gradients and an inhomogeneous navier-stokes solver, to find the opt...

In this paper, we solve unconstrained optimization problem using a free line search steepest descent method. First, we propose a double parameter scaled quasi Newton formula for calculating an approximation of the Hessian matrix. The approximation obtained from this formula is a positive definite matrix that is satisfied in the standard secant relation. We also show that the largest eigen value...

An expectation maximization (EM) algorithm is derived to estimate the parameters of a phylogenetic model, a probabilistic model of molecular evolution that considers the phylogeny, or evolutionary tree, by which a set of present-day organisms are related. The EM algorithm is then extended for use with a combined phylogenetic and hidden Markov model. An efficient method is also shown for computi...

one of the problems that sometimes occur in gas allocation optimization is instability phenomenon. this phenomenon reduces the oil production and damages downhole and surface facilities. different works have studied the stability and suggested some solutions to override it, but most of them (such as making the well intelligent) are very expensive and thus they are not applicable to many cases. ...

In the framework of elastic shape analysis, a shape is invariant to scaling, translation, rotation and reparameterization. Since this framework does not yield a closed form of geodesic between two shapes, iterative methods have been proposed. In particular, path straightening methods have been proposed and used for computing a geodesic that is invariant to curve scaling and translation. Path st...

We consider the application of the globalized semismooth Newton method to the solution of (the KKT conditions of) quasi variational inequalities. We show that the method is globally and locally superlinearly convergent for some important classes of quasi variational inequality problems. We report numerical results to illustrate the practical behavior of the method.

It has been demonstrated that the absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) proposed recently in literature can be used to exactly describe the flexible multibody system unlike traditional methods such as the floating coordinate method and assumed mode method. Therefore, in this paper a new dynamic modeling technique for a two-link flexible manipulator based on absolute nodal coordinate meth...

Among numerical methods for smooth unconstrained optimization, gradient-based linesearch methods, like quasi-Newton methods, may work quite well even in the presence of relatively high amplitude noise in the gradient of the objective function. We present some properties on the amplitude of this noise which ensure a descent direction for such a method. Exploiting this bound, we also discuss cond...

A quasi-Newton algorithm for semi-infinite programming using an Leo exact penalty function is described, and numerical results are presented. Comparisons with three Newton algorithms and one other quasi-Newton algorithm show that the algorithm is very promising in practice. AMS classifications: 65K05,90C30.

Mean-shift analysis is a general nonparametric clustering technique based on density estimation for the analysis of complex feature spaces. The algorithm consists of a simple iterative procedure that shifts each of the feature points to the nearest stationary point along the gradient directions of the estimated density function. It has been successfully applied to many applications such as segm...
