Deinococcus grandis is a radioresistant bacterium isolated from freshwater fish in Japan. Here we reported the draft genome sequence of D. grandis (4.1 Mb), which will be useful for elucidating the common principles of radioresistance in Deinococcus species through the comparative analysis of genomic sequences.

Radiotherapy is the primary treatment for nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC), but radioresistance remains a serious obstacle to successful treatment in many cases. To identify the proteins involved in this resistance and to evaluate their potential for predicting NPC response to radiotherapy, we first established a radioresistant subclone cell line (CNE2-IR) derived from NPC cell line CNE2 by treating...

Grid therapy is a treatment technique that has been introduced for patients with advanced bulky tumors. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the radiation sensitivity of the tumors and the design of the grid blocks on the clinical response of grid therapy. The Monte Carlo simulation technique is used to determine the dose distribution through a grid block that was used for ...

High linear energy transfer (LET) radiation or heavy ion such as carbon ion radiation is used as a method for advanced radiotherapy in the treatment of cancer. It has many advantages over the conventional photon based radiotherapy using Co-60 gamma or high energy X-rays from a Linear Accelerator. However, charged particle therapy is very costly. One way to reduce the cost as well as irradiation...

Schwannomas are benign peripheral nerve sheath tumors that occur throughout the body. They may present as either solitary or multiple masses. They rarely occur in the nasal cavity. The diagnosis is often made only after histologic examination. Because these lesions are radioresistant, the preferred treatment is complete surgical excision. We present a new case of a schwannoma of the nasal cavity.

Canine cancer cell lines have progressively been developed, but are still underused resources for radiation biology research. Measurement of the cellular intrinsic radiosensitivity is important because understanding the difference may provide a framework for further elucidating profiles for prediction of radiation therapy response. Our studies have focused on characterizing diverse canine cance...

Apoptosis levels have been shown to predict tumor response to preoperative radiochemotherapy in rectal cancer. Recently, the prominent role of survivin, a structurally unique member of the inhibitor of apoptosis protein family, has been shown in colorectal cancer tumorigenesis and prognosis. In this study, we investigated whether survivin plays a direct role in mediating radiation resistance. W...

The mechanism for innate resistance to ectromelia virus, which is controlled by a single gene in C57BL mice, was investigated. The cells or factors involved appear to be radioresistant and to impose an early barrier to viral penetration and spread via lymphatics or blood to the target organs, i.e., liver and spleen.
