The association of the anti-anginal drug nicorandil with oral and anal ulceration is becoming more widely recognised, but there are no reports of isolated nicorandil-induced rectal ulceration. Awareness of this condition is poor, and patients often undergo unnecessary surgery for a condition which resolves on stopping the medication. We report a case of nicorandil-induced rectal ulceration causi...

ing rectal resection with anastomosis is symptomatic anastomotic leakage, especially after resection of middle and low rectal cancers. Anastomotic leakage is also a major cause of postoperative morbidity and mortality in patients with rectal cancer undergoing sphincter preservation surgery. Leakage rates from 2.8% to more than 15% have been reported by several investigators. Many factors may be...

The occurrence of perineal hernias in dogs during routine clinical surgery is frequent. The coexistence of rectal diseases that go undiagnosed or are not correctly treated can cause recurrence and postoperative complications. The objective of this report is to describe a surgical technique for treatment of rectal sacculation through lateral resection in dogs with perineal hernia, whereby restor...

The aim of preoperative radiotherapy for rectal cancer is to improve the local control rate, increase the possibility for sphincter preservation, and improve the survival and the quality of life. Randomized clinical trials have shown that combining radical surgery with preoperative radiochemotherapy is more effective in improving the local control rate as compared with radical surgery or preope...

Long-course chemo-radiotherapy (45~50 Gy in 25 fractions) with delayed surgery or short-course radiotherapy (25 Gy in 5 fractions) with immediate surgery were the most frequent regimens for the treatment of localized and locally advanced resectable rectal cancer (SWEDISH RECTAL CANCER TRIAL, 1997; Colorectal Cancer Collaborative Group, 2001; Kapiteijn et al., 2001; Sauer et al., 2004). Compared...

PURPOSE Robotic surgery is expected to have advantages over laparoscopic surgery; however, there are limited data regarding the feasibility of robotic surgery for rectal cancer after preoperative chemoradiotherapy (CRT). Therefore, we evaluated the short-term outcomes of robotic surgery for rectal cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS Thirty-three patients with cT3N0-2 rectal cancer after preoperativ...

We report a rare case of rectal prolapse with Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome in which laparoscopic bilateral oophorectomy and rectopexy were performed simultaneously and resulted in improved quality of life due to the loss of ascites and the repair of rectal prolapse. Laparoscopic surgery is feasible for rectal prolapse with Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome.
