In this paper, an accurate theoretical analysis for the achievable average channel capacity (in the Shannon sense) per user of a hybrid cellular direct-sequence/fast frequency hopping code-division multiple-access (DS/FFH-CDMA) system operating in a Rayleigh fading environment is presented. The analysis covers the downlink operation and leads to the derivation of an exact mathematical expressio...

 Abstract—In this paper, we consider the analysis of cooperative relay-based amplify-and-forward system in terms of Shannon capacity, probability of error, and outage probability over fading channels. The relay gain is optimized with the objective of maximizing the received signal-to-noiseratio (SNR) at the destination, given that the fading statistics of the links in the cooperative system ar...

The field of coding theory emerged with the pioneering work of Claude E. Shannon “A Mathematical Theory of Communication”, published in 1948 in the Bell System Technical Journal. In his work, Shannon investigates both the transmission and compression of information. A probabilistic model is proposed for the communication channel or for the source, and a mathematical measure is proposed to quant...

We obtain the Shannon capacity of a fading channel with channel side information at the transmitter and receiver, and at the receiver alone. The optimal power adaptation in the former case is “water-pouring” in time, analogous to water-pouring in frequency for time-invariant frequency-selective fading channels. Inverting the channel results in a large capacity penalty in severe fading.

We propose a variable-rate and variable-power MQAM modulation scheme for high-speed data transmission over fading channels. We first review results for the Shannon capacity of fading channels with channel side information, where capacity is achieved using adaptive transmission techniques. We then derive the spectral efficiency of our proposed modulation. We show that there is a constant power g...

With the advent of massive data outputs at a regular rate, admittedly, signal processing technology plays an increasingly key role. Nowadays, signals are not merely restricted to physical sources, they have been extended to digital sources as well. Under the general assumption of discrete statistical signal sources, we propose a practical problem of sampling incomplete noisy signals for which w...

We study the use of quantum entanglement in the zero-error source-channel coding problem. Here, Alice and Bob are connected by a noisy classical one-way channel, and are given correlated inputs from a random source. Their goal is for Bob to learn Alice’s input while using the channel as little as possible. In the zero-error regime, the optimal rates of source codes and channel codes are given b...

Shannon in his seminal work [1] formalized the framework on the problem of digital communication of information and storage. He quantified the fundamental limits of compression and transmission rates. The quantity channel capacity was coined to give an operational meaning on the ultimate limit of information transfer between two entities, transmitter and receiver. By using a random coding argum...
