The title compound, C(13)H(20)O(4)Si(2), is a siloxane-functionalized norbornane anhydride. Both five-membered heterocyclic rings of the mol-ecule have a planar structure, whereas the two five-membered aliphatic rings assume envelope conformations. Weak inter-molecular C-H⋯O hydrogen bonding is present in the crystal structure.

Ketones are efficiently deoxygenated in the presence of silane using highly electrophilic phosphonium cation (EPC) salts as catalysts, thus affording the corresponding alkane and siloxane. The influence of distinct substitution patterns on the catalytic effectiveness of several EPCs was evaluated. The deoxygenation mechanism was probed by DFT methods.

OBJECTIVE To demonstrate attenuation of radiation from iodine 125 ((125)I) to intraocular structures using liquid vitreous substitutes. METHODS Four candidate vitreous substitutes were tested for attenuation using empirical measurement and theoretical calculation. In vitro and ex vivo cadaveric dosimetry measurements were obtained with lithium fluoride thermoluminescent dosimeters to demonstr...

Intracranial pressure and volume vary considerably between hydrocephalic patients, and with age, health and haemodynamic status; if left untreated, intracranial pressure rises and the ventricular system expands to accommodate the excess cerebrospinal fluid, with significant morbidity and mortality. Cerebrospinal fluid shunts in use today have a high incidence of failure with shunt obstruction b...

Traditional techniques for the fabrication of a facial moulage have relied on materials with various shortcomings. This article describes a two-stage Poly(vinyl siloxane) impression technique that avoids some of these shortcomings and provides a predictable and accurate facial moulage.

Highly fluorescent non-volatile fluidic fluorene derivatives functionalized with siloxane chains were synthesized and used in monolithic solvent-free liquid organic semiconductor distributed feedback lasers. The photoluminescence quantum yield values, the amplified spontaneous emission thresholds and the ambipolar charge carrier mobilities demonstrate that this class of materials is extremely p...

In situ, temperature dependent, XAFS proved that Cr(II) grafted on SiO(2) is extracted from the surface upon CO adsorption at 100 K: DeltaR(Cr-O) = +0.08 A. CO adsorption evolves into two coverage dependent steps: (i) displacement of weak siloxane ligands (non-classical carbonyls); (ii) relaxation of R(Cr-O) surface bond, R(Cr-CO) optimization and transformation into classical carbonyls.

Manipulation makes light work: The morphology and rheological properties of a liquid-crystalline system can be dynamically manipulated with UV light by attaching photoresponsive liquid-crystalline moieties to a siloxane-based polymer. Stimulation with UV light induces a conformational change in the molecule, which disrupts the liquid-crystalline mesophase (see picture), and results in a dramati...

A copper-catalyzed C-N bond forming reaction among aryl siloxane and primary, secondary amines as well as amides has been described. The reaction was conducted in the presence of P(C6F5)3 and 4 A molecular sieves in CH2Cl2 at room temperature under O2. A catalytic amount of TBAF was employed to activate aryl siloxanes.
