Electrochemical techniques rely on the stability of a defined reference potential. Due to the need for miniaturization, electrochemical lab-on-a-chip platforms often employ Ag/AgCl quasi-reference electrodes for this purpose. Here, we report on electrochemical artifacts resulting from nanoparticle-electrode collisions originating from standard chlorinated silver wires.

Herein, debris particulates of nanoporous silver (np-Ag) were synthesised by a dealloying method, and their integration behaviour and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) properties during iodine functionalisation were examined. It was found that the dealloyed np-Ag debris particulates gradually assembled to form rigid nanoporous microspheres comprising Ag nano-ligaments due to mechanical c...

Silver and gold nanoparticle superlattices with a layered structure were obtained via grafting of mesogenic molecules onto a metallic cluster surface. For the Ag superstructures unusual orientational order of the mesogenic ligands and anisotropy of the assembly afforded tunable plasmonic properties.

Silver nanoparticle studded scaffolds were prepared by exploiting the Ag(+) ion reducing activity of sophorolipids--a class of 'glycolipids' that cap the ensuing nanoparticles as well. To achieve this, the porous polyethylene scaffolds are subjected to N(2) + H(2) plasma treatment, in the first step. Subsequently the sophorolipids are covalently attached to the amine groups on the polymer surfa...

There is a growing consumer market for products that proclaim to decrease microorganism counts to prevent infections. Most of these products are loaded with silver in its ionic or nanoparticle form. Through use or during production, these particles can find their way into the soil and cause an impact in microbial and plant communities. This study aims to evaluate the impact of silver based part...

We report a one-pot synthesis of silver nanoparticle-polymer composites (Ag-PNCs) in water by a novel finding involving the polycondensation of methoxybenzyl chlorides (MeO-BzCl) directly on Ag nanoparticle surfaces at room temperature, leading to highly soluble antimicrobial nanocomposites. The composites, which are soluble in a range of organic solvents, precipitate in the reaction vessel, ma...

BACKGROUND Quantification of nanoparticle (NP) uptake in cells or tissues is very important for safety assessment. Often, electron microscopy based approaches are used for this purpose, which allow imaging at very high resolution. However, precise quantification of NP numbers in cells and tissues remains challenging. The aim of this study was to present a novel approach, that combines precise q...

By controlling the thickness of the silver shell, Au-Ag core-shell nanorods with quadruple plasmonic peaks corresponding to red, green, violet and deep violet regions have been prepared. Additionally, under polarized light, we achieved tunability of scattered colors from a single nanoparticle over an exceptionally wide wavelength range. The observed colors include red, orange, yellow, green, bl...

Combination of chlorhexidine (CHX) and silver ions could engender synergistic bactericidal effect and improve the bactericidal efficacy. It is highly desired to develop an efficient carrier for the antiseptics codelivery targeting infection foci with acidic microenvironment. In this work, monodisperse mesoporous silica nanoparticle (MSN) nanospheres were successfully developed as an ideal carri...

Silver nano-particles (Ag-NPs) are becoming increasingly prevalent in consumer products as antibacterial agents. The increased use of Ag NP-enhanced products will almost certainly increase environmental silver levels, resulting in increased exposures and the potential for increased adverse reactions including neurotoxic effects. In the present study, embryonic neural stem cells (NSCs) from huma...
