Sensor networks introduce new resource allocation problems in which sensors need to be assigned to the tasks they best help. Such problems have been previously studied in simplified models in which utility from multiple sensors is assumed to combine additively. In this paper we study more complex utility models, focusing on two particular applications: event detection and target localization. W...

Power loss is one <span lang="EN-US">of the important pointers used to measure performance of distributions networks. Many optimization algorithms have been proposed solve various optimal power flow problems in Electrical Engineering. In this paper, a novel technique, artificial algae algorithm developed robustly detect location and size distributed generation (DG) units for minimization ...

A visual stimulus at a particular location of the visual field may elicit a behavior while at the same time equally salient stimuli in other parts do not. This property of visual systems is known as selective visual attention (SVA). The animal is said to have a focus of attention (FoA) which it has shifted to a particular location. Visual attention normally involves an attention span at the loc...

Six location-cuing experiments were conducted to examine the goal-driven control of attentional capture in multiple-cue displays. In most of the experiments, the cue display consisted of the simultaneous presentation of a red direct cue that was highly predictive of the target location (the unique cue) and three gray direct cues (the standard cues) that were not predictive of the location. The ...

This paper proposes a technique that segments audio according to speakers based on their location. In many multi-party conversations, such as meetings, the location of participants is restricted to a small number of regions, such as seats around a table, or at a whiteboard. In such cases, segmentation according to these discrete regions would be a reliable means of determining speaker turns. We...

We introduce a multiscale test statistic based on local order statistics and spacings that provides simultaneous confidence statements for the existence and location of local increases and decreases of a density or a failure rate. The procedure provides guaranteed finite-sample significance levels, is easy to implement and possesses certain asymptotic optimality and adaptivity properties.
