Mice heterozygous for Min, a mutant allele of Apc, develop adenomas throughout the intestinal tract. Tumor multiplicity in Min mice is influenced by genetic modifier loci. Previously, we mapped one of these modifier loci, Mom1, to distal mouse chromosome 4. Mom1 is a semidominant modifier of both tumor size and multiplicity in Min mice. Recent evidence suggests that Mom1 may encode a secretory ...

We present a case of male patient, who was referred to our department because of acute intestinal obstruction, which was the initial clinical symptom of primary lung cancer. The abdominal computed tomography (CT) prior to the emergency operation showed small intestinal obstruction and metastases to both adrenal glands. The patient underwent an emergency abdominal exploratory laparotomy, that co...

Inflammatory fibroid polyps are rare, benign pseudotumors of the gastrointestinal tract of unknown etiology, which may rarely present as bowel intussusception and obstruction. The authors describe the clinical, radiologic, and pathologic features of 2 patients with ileal inflammatory fibroid polyps presenting as small bowel intussusception.

Study sample A sample of 31 patients (18 males and 13 females; age range: 27 73 years) was enrolled in the study. Seven patients were under investigation for suspected carcinoids in different sites (caecum, appendix, small intestine, pancreas) and 24 had histologically or cytologically confirmed tumours (in 10 of them the primary lesion was excised). Power calculations do not appear to have bee...

There is striking variation in the incidence of cancer in human organs. Malignant tumors are common in the colon and breast but rare in the heart and small bowel. The uterus frequently develops benign fibroid tumors but uterine cancers are relatively rare. The organ-specific difference in cancer prevalence has been explained primarily by the relative roles of intrinsic and extrinsic risk factor...

Multiple leiomyomata of the small intestine are rare. We report one such case where a leiomyosarcoma had arisen from a leiomyoma in the small intestine 8 years after presentation. The possible origin of the leiomyomata is discussed and it is concluded that small intestinal leiomyomatosis should be regarded as a premalignant condition.

We have performed experiments to determine whether the soybean-derived protease inhibitor, Bowman-Birk inhibitor (BBI), has the ability to affect intestinal carcinogenesis in Min mice. Min mice have an autosomally dominantly inherited predisposition to multiple intestinal neoplasms and are known to have a very high spontaneous rate of tumor development in both the small intestine and colon. BBI...
