We measure the rates of type I X-ray bursts from a likely complete sample of 37 non-pulsing Galactic X-ray transients observed with the RXTE ASM during 1996-2004. Pointed RXTE observations of these sources are used to identify bursts via timing and spectral criteria applied to PCA data. These X-ray transients have been classified as dynamical black hole binaries (9), black hole candidates (10),...

An analytical model of a video transmission system is used to study the impact of its parameters. The optimal trade–off between error resilience using INTRA coding and the channel code rate is determined for given channel parameters by minimizing the expected MSE at the decoder. It is shown that the results strongly depend on the burstiness of the channel.

In a variety of networks, packet losses occur in bursts. Conventional application of error correcting codes for packet recovery often requires interleaving and long decoder delays. These long delays are usually unacceptable in real-time multimedia communication applications such as Voice over IP (VoIP). Consequently erasure correction codes with severe limits on delay are desirable. We present ...

In this work, we derive upper bounds on the cardinality of tandem and palindromic duplication correcting codes by deriving the generalized sphere packing bound for these error types. We first prove that an upper bound for tandem or palindromic deletions is also an upper bound for inserting the respective type of duplications. Therefore, we derive the bounds based on these special deletions as t...

The paper presents lower and upper bounds on the number of parity-check digits required for a linear code that is capable of detecting repeated low-density burst errors of length b (fixed) with weight w or less (w ≤ b). A bound for codes which can correct and simultaneously detect such burst errors has also been derived. An illustration has been provided for the code detecting 2-repeated burst ...

A simple modification of the decision feedback equalizer (DFE) slicer is proposed to reduce the effect of error propagation. A comparison of the performance of the modified DFE and conventional DFE is made for specific channels. On these channels, modified DFE performs only marginally better than the conventional DFE in terms of average error probability, but may offer some advantages in terms ...

Van Jacobson (VJ) TCP header compression significantly reduces TCP protocol overhead in a noiseless environment. Unfortunately, when the algorithm operates in error prone environments similar to wireless, the performance of the compressor drops to below that of not using header compression. This work describe modifications to the VJ algorithm that allow it to better tolerate errors. By removing...

In this paper we present a novel algorithm to track the facial features using a deformable triangle model. The face is modeled as an isosceles triangle connecting the eyes and lips which are called as features of interest (FoI). A maximum likelihood estimator is used to estimate the position of such a triangle in the image sequences by maximizing the correlation value of the feature template in...

Spectroscopic observations provide evidence that the optical transient object observed in 1966 on archival plates of Sonneberg Observatory is a B=18.5 dMe star. For an assumed are duration of 40 min. (or longer) the are amplitude was 4m B 5.2 mag. If the recorded event was belonging to the class of 'fast' ares its amplitude could have reached 7-9 mag.. We estimate a lower limit for the optical ...

The estimation of quality for real time services over telecommunication networks requires realistic models in order to generate impairments and failures during transmission. Starting with the classical Gilbert-Elliot model, we derive the second order statistics over arbitrary time scales and fit the parameters to match the packet loss pattern of traffic traces. The results show that simple Mark...
