Methanogenic fluorescent colonies can be clearly identified on roll tubes by using an epifluorescence microscope equipped with a x 2 objective. Methanogenic and nonmethanogenic colonies could be counted in roll tubes prepared from methanogenic enrichment cultures. Late-developing colonies appearing after 25 days of incubation were mainly methanogenic.

To achieve a functioning and stable process with high methane production, it is important to create and maintain a beneficial environment for the activity of bacterial consortia of suitable species. Therefore, an experiment has been carried out to isolate methanogenic and nonmethanogenic bacteria from anaerobic biogas system. With this view, a microbial consortium and their relative performance...

Due to unspecified operational problems, the specific acetoclastic activity (SAA) of the anaerobic granular sludge present in an industrial UASB reactor was considerably damaged (from 250 to less than 10mL CH(4)@STP/gVSS.d), significantly reducing the biogas production of that industrial unit. The hydrogenotrophic methanogenic activity exhibited a value of 600mL CH4@STP/gVSS.d, the settling vel...

PURPOSE To determine whether basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF) and transforming growth factor-beta 2 (TGF-beta 2) influence the contractile activity and the expression of alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) in bovine lens epithelial cells (LECs). To examine whether modulation of contractile activity by these growth factors depends on changes of alpha-SMA expression. METHODS Bovine LECs ...

IMPORTANCE The important depletion of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and the general depression of mitochondrial respiratory chain complex levels (including complex II) have been confirmed, implying an increasing paucity of mitochondria in the muscle from patients with types I, II, and III spinal muscular atrophy (SMA-I, -II, and -III, respectively). OBJECTIVE To investigate mitochondrial dysfunct...

Eleven right-handed subjects performed uni- and bimanual tapping tasks. Hemodynamic responses as measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in the primary somato-motor cortex (SMC) showed that during bimanual activity the SMC contralateral to the hand taking the faster rate was more strongly activated than the SMC contralateral to hand taking the slower rate. There were no asymm...

In Motor Neglect (MN) syndrome, a specific impairment in non-congruent bimanual movements has been described. In the present case-control study, we investigated the neuro-functional correlates of this behavioral deficit. Two right-brain-damaged (RBD) patients, one with (MN+) and one without (MN-) MN, were evaluated by means of functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) in a bimanual Circles-L...

Vascular progenitor cells are desirable in a variety of therapeutic strategies; however, the lineage commitment of endothelial and smooth muscle cell from a common progenitor is not well-understood. Here, we report the generation of the first dual reporter mouse embryonic stem cell (mESC) lines designed to facilitate the study of vascular endothelial and smooth muscle development in vitro. Thes...

Free, i.e. non-externally cued generation of movement sequences is fundamental to human behavior. We have earlier hypothesized that the dorsal premotor cortex (PMD), which has been consistently implicated in cognitive aspects of planning and selection of spatial motor sequences may be particularly important for the free generation of spatial movement sequences, whereas the pre-supplementary mot...

Syngas generated by thermal gasification of biomass or coal can be steam reformed and purified into methane, which could be used locally for energy needs, or re-injected in the natural gas grid. As an alternative to chemical catalysis, the main components of the syngas (CO, CO2, and H2) can be used as substrates by a wide range of microorganisms, to be converted into gas biofuels, including met...
