A series of experiments was performed to evaluate the effect of substituting sodium carbonate for the sodium hydroxide used in peroxide bleaching of spruce CTMP. Three peroxide levels were tested: I , 2, and 4% HzOz, and two levels of causticsubstitution; SO% and 80%. At both the 2% and 4% peroxide levels, substituting 50% of the caustic charge with sodium carbonate decreased the initial bright...

Spatiotemporal measurements of a near-single-cycle terahertz pulse emitted from a photoconductive switch terahertz (THz) source show the effects of spherical aberration and surface waves on the pulse shape. The measured phase front has a swallow-tail shape described by catastrophe theory that contributes to the concentric ring structure of THz beam profiles. A time-of-flight model shows that th...

We present a method for the visualization of volumetric caustics in single-scattering participating media. The caustics beams are generated from a projected grid in light’s image space, making the solution independent from the geometric complexity of generators. The caustic volumes are extruded in the geometry shader and accumulated into the final volumetric effect.

A retrospective analysis of 98 patients, less than 15 years of age, treated for caustic ingestion during 1976-1990 was performed to evaluate the modern consequences of caustic ingestion in children and to set indications for esophagoscopies and radiographic and laboratory examinations. Dishwasher detergents were ingested by 56 children. There were no lye ingestions, since lye has not been freel...

Van Slyke and Folch (1) used as a combustion mixture a solution of H&04, HsP04, and CrOa, to which pulverized KI03 was added in the combustion tube. It has been found advantageous instead to use as a fluid a mixture of H&S04 and HsPOa without CrOs, both KI03 and KzCrzOr being added in solid form in the combustion tube. This modification has the advantage that both the liquid and the solid reage...

Speaking for Dr. Greene's former students, I would like to extend our sympathy and warmest wishes to the Greene family. The essence of Harry Greene's life was a consistent search for what was true, real, and meaningful in life and science, with little concern for images. This led him to hold personal value standards that differed in some ways from those held by others. In his scale of values, h...
