This paper extends the image charge solvation model (ICSM) [J. Chem. Phys. 131, 154103 (2009)], a hybrid explicit/implicit method to treat electrostatic interactions in computer simulations of biomolecules formulated for spherical cavities, to prolate spheroidal and triaxial ellipsoidal cavities, designed to better accommodate non-spherical solutes in molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. In add...

Flow visualizations are presented for acoustic streaming occurring inside spherical elastic cavities oscillating in an acoustic field. Streaming flows are visualized using Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) and results are observed for a range of values of a dimensionless frequency parameter, M =120-306. Over the frequency range investigated, streaming flow fields remain steady at a given value o...

An algorithm is developed for performing calculations for the nonlocal electrostatic solvation theory of an ion in a cavity, accounting for electrostatic boundary conditions. The latter implies an induced charge distribution on the cavity surface as well as an induced volume charge distribution in the medium. This approach is validated by a variational derivation which also provides a general e...

From analysis of the high Q modes in a Bragg onion resonator with an omnidirectional reflector cladding, we establish a close analogy between such a resonator and a spherical hollow cavity in perfect metal. We demonstrate that onion resonators are ideal for applications that require a large spontaneous-emission factor beta, such as thresholdless lasers and single-photon devices.

We present the analytical solution of a maser shaped like a spherical shell. We determine the general condition on the size of the central cavity at which a sphere becomes a shell maser, and derive the intensity, beaming angle and observed size of both unsaturated and saturated shells.

We propose an integral form of Atiah-Patodi-Singer spectral boundary conditions (SBC) and find explicitly the integral projector onto SBC for the 3-dimensional spherical cavity. After discussion of a simple example we argue that the relation between the projector and fermion propagator is universal and stays valid independently of the bag form and space dimension.

The behavior of photons in the presence of Lorentz and CPT violation is studied. Allowing for operators of arbitrary mass dimension, we classify all gauge-invariant Lorentzand CPT-violating terms in the quadratic Lagrange density associated with the effective photon propagator. The covariant dispersion relation is obtained, and conditions for birefringence are discussed. We provide a complete c...

We have studied the photoluminescence and Raman spectra of a system consisting of a polystyrene latex microsphere coated by CdTe colloidal quantum dots. The cavity-induced enhancement of the Raman scattering allows the observation of Raman spectra from only a monolayer of CdTe quantum dots. Periodic structure with very narrow peaks in the photoluminescence spectra of a single microsphere was de...

We investigate the electromagnetic Casimir interactions of an object contained within an otherwise empty, perfectly conducting spherical shell. For a small object we present analytical calculations of the force, which is directed away from the center of the cavity, and the torque, which tends to align the object opposite to the preferred alignment outside the cavity. For a perfectly conducting ...

A lattice field theory approach to the statistical mechanics of charged polymers in electrolyte solutions [S. Tsonchev, R. D. Coalson, and A. Duncan, Phys. Rev. E 60, 4257 (1999)] is applied to the study of a polymer chain contained in a spherical cavity but able to diffuse into a surrounding gel. The distribution of the polymer chain between the cavity and the gel is described by its partition...
