A fast and convenient method is described for the determination of estrogen receptors (ERs). This method involves the use of rabbit uterus as a standard. ER content of the rabbit uterus powder was determined using the conventional methods, i.e., Scatchard plot and sucrose density gradient methods. The rabbit uterus cytosol was serially diluted to give a range of protein concentrations from 1 to...

Double-antibody radioimmunoassays in which tritium is used for labeling have been adapted for emergency determinations of serum drug concentrations. In the cases of digoxin and gentamicin, the first and second antibody incubations may be carried on simultaneously, minimizing incubation times (10 and 27 mm, respectively). Counting the bound radioactivity in solubilized immunospecific precipitate...

Reef fish distributions are patchy in time and space with some coral reef habitats supporting higher densities (i.e., aggregations) of fish than others. Identifying and quantifying fish aggregations (particularly during spawning events) are often top priorities for coastal managers. However, the rapid mapping of these aggregations using conventional survey methods (e.g., non-technical SCUBA div...

Conditional quantile curves provide a comprehensive picture of a response contingent on explanatory variables. Quantile regression is a technique to estimate such curves. In a flexible modeling framework, a specific form of the quantile is not a priori fixed. Indeed, the majority of applications do not per se require specific functional forms. This motivates a local parametric rather than a glo...

Automatic detection systems usually require large and representative training datasets in order to obtain good detection and false positive rates. Training datasets are such that the positive set has few samples and/or the negative set should represent anything except the object of interest. In this respect, the negative set typically contains orders of magnitude more images than the positive s...

We evaluated the impact of modelling intra-subject variability on the likelihood ratio test (LRT) and the Wald test based on non-linear mixed effects models in pharmacokinetic interaction and bioequivalence cross-over trials. These tests were previously found to achieve a good power but an inflated type I error when intra-subject variability was not taken into account. Trials were simulated und...

OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to determine the importance of β-hCG level on day 4 following methotrexate (MTX) administration, and the difference between β-hCG levels assessed on day 0 and day 4 in predicting treatment success. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 68 women with tubal pregnancy, treated with a single dose of MTX, were selected for this retrospective study. RESULTS The succes...

Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves are used to describe and compare the performance of diagnostic technology and diagnostic algorithms. This paper refines the statistical comparison of the areas under two ROC curves derived from the same set of patients by taking into account the correlation between the areas that is induced by the paired nature of the data. The correspondence betwe...

We propose a novel SAS macro to utilize PROC NLMIXED in SAS to estimate the standard error for AUC when the AUC estimator is based on the trapezoidal rule. Our method accounts for the trapezoidal region-by-region correlation structure. An example is provided for the standard error of the AUC under the ROC curve.

Transportation is an essential driver of the supply chain; directly impacts both the responsiveness and efficiency therein. The decision of route selection based on the optimal travel time reduces the product delivery time and cost; enhancing customer satisfaction. This paper presents a case study identifying the optimal routes in a network consisting of 81 alternatives. Various sample data wer...
