Of 124 staphylococcal strains isolated from sheep milk, 78 produced enterotoxin A, B, C, or D when evaluated by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Enterotoxins A and D, elaborated by 44 and 43 strains, respectively, showed the highest incidence. Enterotoxin production by coagulase-negative strains (one Staphylococcus cohnii, three S. epidermidis, five S. haemolyticus, and four S. xylosus) wa...

Staphylococcus aureus is an important opportunist that can cause superficial to life-threatening illnesses in humans and a variety of animal species. Staphylococcal enterotoxin has an important role in food poisoning in human. Staphylococcal enterotoxin A is the most commonly reported enterotoxin in staphylococcal food poisoning. This study revealed the presence of enterotoxin (like) genes (sea...

The production of staphylococcal exfoliative toxin A (ETA) and toxin B (ETB), toxic shock syndrome toxin (TSST-1), and enterotoxins A-E was analyzed in 60 Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from children with scalded skin syndrome (15 with generalized exfoliative syndrome, 28 with bullous impetigo, and 17 with staphylococcal scarlet fever). All strains isolated from patients with generalize...

Pyrogenic responses, ranging up to 4.8 F, were induced in cats by oral administration of highly purified staphylococcal enterotoxin B in doses from 10 to 100 mug/kg. Fever was a more sensitive indicator of intoxication than was emesis. Highly purified preparations of enterotoxin A, whether administered intravenously (0.01 to 1.0 mug/kg), orally (10 to 25 mug/kg), or into the cerebral ventricles...

Endogenous superantigen-mediated thymic negative selection resulted in a paucity of mature T cells bearing T-cell receptor (TCR) Vbeta8 in the periphery. Consequently, the magnitude of immune response to exogenous superantigen staphylococcal enterotoxin B, which activates TCR Vbeta8(+) T cells, was significantly reduced and conferred protection from superantigen-induced mortality.

METHODS: Sixty patients undergoing surgical treatment for breast cancer or benign breast disease were prospectively recruited and preoperative blood samples were obtained. Mononuclear cells were separated using density gradient technique and activated using the T-cell mitogen staphylococcal enterotoxin B (SEB). Following culture interleukin 2 (IL2) ELISA was performed to assess T-cell function ...

The rapid microtiter technique was investigated as a means of facilitating the detection of staphylococcal enterotoxin B. With this technique, many samples were assayed simultaneously, and readable results were obtained in 3 hr. Other advantages of this method, in addition to speed, were the small quantity of reactants used, ease of reading, and reproducibility.

A sensitive radioimmunoassay utilizing Staphylococcus aureus cells containing protein A as a coprecipitant was developed for the detection and quantitation of staphylococcal enterotoxins A, B, C, D, and E in a variety of foods. The enterotoxins were extracted from the foods by a simple and rapid procedure. The sensitivity of the assay is 1.0 ng or less of enterotoxin per g of food.

At the end of 2009, six food poisoning outbreaks caused by staphylococci were reported in France. Soft cheese made from unpasteurized milk was found to be the common source of the outbreaks. Staphylococcal enterotoxin type E was identified and quantified in the cheese using both official and confirmatory methods of the European Union Reference Laboratory (EU-RL). To our knowledge, this is the f...
