Suprascapular neuropathy is an underrecognized cause of shoulder girdle weakness and pain. The clinical and electrophysiologic techniques of diagnosis are easily learned. Both nonoperative and operative treatments are successful when properly chosen. Advances in correlation of nerve conduction study results with treatment choice and outcomes provide a motor-based prognostic model for suprascapu...
Traditionally, suprascapular nerve reconstruction in obstetric brachial plexus palsy is done using either the proximal C5 root stump or the spinal accessory nerve. This paper introduces another potential donor nerve for neurotizing the suprascapular nerve: the phrenic nerve communicating branch to the C5 root. The prevalence of this communicating branch ranges from 23% to 62% in various anatomi...
BACKGROUND Suprascapular nerve pathology is a rare diagnosis that is increasingly gaining popularity among the conditions that cause shoulder pain and dysfunction. The suprascapular nerve passes through several osseoligamentous structures and can be compressed in several locations. METHODS A thorough literature search was performed using online available databases in order to carefully define...
Compressive lesions of the suprascapular nerve produce weakness and atrophy of the supra- and infraspinatus muscles and a poorly defined aching pain along the posterior aspect of the shoulder joint and the adjacent scapula. Entrapment neuropathy of the suprascapular nerve is fairly common whereas tumorous lesions are rare; among the latter ganglion cysts are frequently seen. An isolated solitar...
AIMS The aim of our study was to compare the effects of suprascapular nerve block in patients with frozen shoulder and diabetes mellitus unresponsive to intraarticular steroid injections. SETTINGS AND DESIGN Ten patients without improvement of sign and symptoms after intraarticular injections were made a suprascapular nerve block. METHODS Pain levels and active range of movement of patients...
BACKGROUND It has been indicated that rotator cuff tears, especially large or massive ones, can cause suprascapular neuropathy. When such a diagnosis has been established, it is still unknown whether an arthroscopic release of the superior transverse scapular ligament during cuff repair can change the course of this neuropathy. METHODS/DESIGN This is a single-center, double-blinded randomized...
Two patients underwent arthroscopy-guided injections of autologous fibrin sealants to treat ganglion cysts causing suprascapular nerve palsies. After at least 2 years of follow-up, both patients had no suprascapular nerve symptoms and their external rotation strength had returned to normal. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed no evidence of ganglion cyst recurrence.
