the well-known electro-mechanical analogy that equates current, voltage, resistance, inductance and capacitance to force, velocity, damping, spring constant and mass has a shortcoming in that mass can only be used to simulate a capacitor which has one terminal connected to ground. a new model that was previously proposed by the authors that combines a mass with a pulley (mp) is shown to simulat...

in this paper, an adaptive rule based controller for an anti-lock regenerative braking system (arbs) of a series hybrid electric bus (sheb) has been proposed. the proposed controller integrates the regenerative braking and wheel anti-lock functions by controlling the electric motor of the hybrid vehicle, without using any conventional mechanical anti-lock braking system. the performance of the ...

[1] Estimating transpiration and water flow in trees remains a major challenge for quantifying water exchange between the biosphere and the atmosphere. We develop a finite element tree crown hydrodynamics (FETCH) model that uses porous media equations for water flow in an explicit three-dimensional branching fractal tree-crown system. It also incorporates a first-order canopy-air turbulence clo...

Sustainable water management requires the quantification of the spatial and temporal changes of water balance variables. Fully distributed hydrological simulations of these variables are especially in regions with weak infrastructure challenging, because the required meteorological input data are often not available in a sufficient spatial and temporal resolution. One possibility to deal with t...

The closure problem of representing hydrological boundary fluxes given the state of the system has been described as the scientific ‘Holy Grail’ of hydrology. This relationship between storage state and flux should be hysteretic and scale dependent because of the differences between velocities and celerities in a hydrological system—effectively velocities are storage controlled, and celerities ...

Laser Raman spectroscopy has been employed to investigate the effects of cyclosporine-A on the order and dynamics of DPPC (Dipalmytoyl Phosphatidyl Choline) midel membrane system. It is shown that the addition of small amount of cyclosporine-A to a DPPC dispersion disturb the system and changes the order/disorder parameter of the model membrane.

Information about hydrological systems and water table fluctuations is important for water management and is needed to assess choices for long-term water management policy. Preferably, uncertainty about the future water table depths is quantified to enable risk assessment. The aim of this study is to map water table depths and quantify the associated uncertainty, in order to indicate extreme sc...

Drought stress is a dominant constraint to crop production. Breeding crops with adapted root systems for effective uptake of water represents a novel strategy to increase crop drought resistance. Due to complex interaction between root traits and high diversity of hydrological conditions, modeling provides important information for trait based selection. In this work we use a root architecture ...

[1] Soil temperature and moisture are important factors that control many ecosystem processes. However, interactions between soil thermal and hydrological processes are not adequately understood in cold regions, where the frozen soil, fire disturbance, and soil drainage play important roles in controlling interactions among these processes. These interactions were investigated with a new ecosys...

This paper analyzes the potential of a nu-support vector regression (nu-SVR) model for the reconstruction of missing data of hydrological time series from a sensor network. Sensor networks are currently experiencing rapid growth of applications in experimental research and monitoring and provide an opportunity to study the dynamics of hydrological processes in previously ungauged or remote area...
