The optical flash accompanying GRB 990123 is believed to be powered by the reverse shock of a thin shell. With the best fitted physical parameters for GRB 990123 (Panaitescu & Kumar 2001) and the assumption that the parameters in the optical flash are the same as those in the afterglow, we show that: 1) the shell is thick but not thin, and we have provided the light curve for the thick shell ca...

Yolk/shell capsules containing a volume/hydrophobicity transformable core and an ultra-thin silica shell have been prepared. When an external magnetic field induced the temperature, the cores exhibit a significant triggering size shrinkage and the diameter decreases more than 10 times, causing solid shells destruction and physical collapse, leading to drug burst release.

Modal signals of transverse sensing of truncated conical shells with simply supported boundary condition at both ends are investigated. The embedded piezoelectric layer on the surface of conical shell is used as sensors and output voltages of them in considered modes are calculated. The Governing sensing signal displacement equations are derived based on the Kirchhoff theory, thin-shell assumpt...

Previous analysis about thin-shell wormholes associated to cosmic strings are extended. More evidence is found supporting the conjecture that, under reasonable assumptions about the equations of state of matter on the shell, the configurations are not stable under radial velocity perturbations.

In this paper we calculate the entropy of a thin spherical shell that contracts reversibly from infinity down to its event horizon. We find that, for a broad class of equations of state, the entropy of a nonextremal shell is one-quarter of its area in the black hole limit. The considerations in this paper suggest the following operational definition for the entropy of a black hole: SBH is the e...

A new technique is reported for the transformation of smooth nonpolar ZnO nanowire surfaces to zigzagged high-index polar surfaces using polycrystalline ZnO thin films deposited by atomic layer deposition (ALD). The c-axis-oriented ZnO nanowires with smooth nonpolar surfaces are fabricated using vapor deposition method and subsequently coated by ALD with a ZnO particulate thin film. The synthes...

UNLABELLED Single-crystalline Cu7In3/CuIn0.8Ga0.2Se2 (CI/CIGS) core/shell nanowires are fabricated by pulsed laser deposition with Ni nanoparticles as catalyst. The CI/CIGS core/shell nanowires are made up of single-crystalline CI cores surrounded by single-crystalline CIGS shells. The CI/CIGS nanowires are grown at a considerably low temperature (350°C ~ 450°C) by vapor-liquid-solid mode combi...

We consider an elastic hollow sphere with midsurface radius R and thickness 2h which is subjected to two equal and opposite concentrated loads acting at the ends of a diameter. The three-dimensional linear elasticity solution to this problem consists of (i) a narrow Saint Venant component extending a distance of order O(h) from each load point, (ii) a wider “edge bending” component extending a ...

STUDY DESIGN The internal architecture of cervical spine pedicles was investigated by thin sectioning and digitization of radiographic images. OBJECTIVES To provide quantitative information on the internal dimensions and cortical shell thicknesses of the middle and lower cervical pedicles. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA Although there have been a number of studies presenting data on the externa...

Computational modeling of thin biological membranes can aid the design of better medical devices. Remarkable biological membranes include skin, alveoli, blood vessels, and heart valves. Isogeometric analysis is ideally suited for biological membranes since it inherently satisfies the C1-requirement for Kirchhoff-Love kinematics. Yet, current isogeometric shell formulations are mainly focused on...
