A Time Projection Chamber (TPC) is one of the promising candidates to perform unique measurements in solar neutrino physics. Its features will enable it to work at depths of the order of 2000 mwe. This paper describes an estimation of the expected cosmogenic background at different depths including also the background due to fission activation of the TPC material above ground.

During the year 2000 the CERES experiment, upgraded with a radial drift TPC, took a large data sample of Pb on Au collisions at 158 AGeV triggered on the 8% most central collisions. A very detailed calibration of the radial drift TPC was since completed. Preliminary results on e + e − pairs and φ mesons reconstructed in the K + K − channel are presented.

The TPC/27 detector and the PEP machine have been upgraded for highluminosity running. We describe the performance of the new configuration during a test run in fall 1988. Prospects for progress in 7 physics, based on a large data sample to be recorded by the TPC/Zy detector, are reviewed.
