Tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) is one of the most common congenital anomaly requiring surgical correction in neonatal period. The important goal of airway management is to avoid excessive gastric distension and ensure adequate ventilation prior to surgical ligation of the fistula. If a large fistula is present close to carina, excessive loss of delivered tidal volume may lead to ineffective ve...
Tracheoesophageal and bronchoesophageal fistulas are usually diagnosed early in life after an infant presents with difficulty feeding or recurrent pneumonias. These conditions rarely presents in adulthood. We report a case of a 59-year-old woman who presented with cough and recurrent pneumonias. The workup revealed a bronchoesophageal fistula that was diagnosed on CT and confirmed with a barium...
Foreign body (FB) ingestion is a common problem in children. Prolonged impaction of FB in esophagus may result in tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). A 6-year-old girl presented with progressive dysphagia and recurrent chest infections. No history of FB ingestion was given by parents. Further investigations revealed FB (spool) in cervical esophagus. Patient was successfully managed by surgery thro...
Introduction. The communication between the trachea and esophagus is called tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF). It can occurs as a congenital malformation (0.025-0.05%) (in particular related to the esophageal atresia) or can occurs as an acquired pathology. Endoscopic evaluation is the gold standard for the diagnosis of TEF and must be performed, in presence of symptoms such as choking, coughing,...
Tracheostomy tube might cause tracheoesophageal fistula (TEF) due to high cuff pressure or direct mechanical trauma. Surgical repair provides the ideal way to deal with TEF but it necessitates the weaning the patient from mechanical ventilation. Here we report a spontaneous closure of TEF by managing it with improved tracheal catheters in a patient who is dependent on mechanical ventilation.
Esophageal atresia without tracheoesophageal fistula is a rare esophageal anomaly in children. We have successfully applied three-dimensional technique of computed tomography on four consecutive babies with this anomaly in order to accurately measure the length of the gap between the two esophageal segments, which is important for preoperative plan and the feasibility and timing of delayed prim...
Acquired tracheoesophageal fistula is a rare condition, often linked to malignancy, trauma, or iatrogenic cuff-related injury. Poor nutrition, infection, radiotherapy, and steroid use are predisposing factors. Surgical management is difficult, time-consuming, and associated with significant morbidity and mortality [1]. Conservative endoscopic therapeutic options, such as self-expandable metal s...
Despite its effectiveness in the treatment of malignant tumors, bevacizumab is associated with a variety of side effects such as the formation of fistulas (i.e., tracheoesophageal, colovaginal, or rectovaginal). It is important to recognize immediately the emergence of this entity in order to discontinue bevacizumab permanently and treat the fistula.
its adjacent structures can cause tracheal damage such as ulceration of the mucosa, tracheal stenosis, tracheoesophageal fistula, tracheomalacia and neck abscess. We describe a case of upper tracheal necrosis as a complication of total thyroidectomy in a hyperthyroid patient, highlighting some of the difficulties presented by a thyrotoxic goitre, which, to our knowledge has not been reported be...
More than 50% of infants with esophageal atresia have associated anomalies. We present a case report of a 46XX neonate with long-gap esophageal atresia and tracheoesophageal fistula (EA/TEF), anorectal malformation, bowel duplication and vaginal agenesis. This is an unusual association of abnormalities which had not yet described in literature.
