Rechecking the position of the nasogastric tube after oropharyngeal suction is not common practice. Our patient deteriorated after oropharyngeal suction was performed, whilst nasogastric feeding continued. We suggest that nasogastric feeding should be stopped during oropharyngeal suction and the tube position should be checked every time an oropharyngeal suction is performed.

BACKGROUND A significant number of patients treated for head and neck squamous cell cancer (HNSCC) undergo enteral tube feeding. Data suggest that avoiding enteral feeding can prevent long-term tube dependence and disuse of the swallowing mechanism which has been linked to complications such as prolonged dysphagia and esophageal constriction. We examined detailed dosimetric and clinical paramet...

INTRODUCTION Early nutrition support is an integral part of the care of critically ill children. Early enteral nutrition (EN) improves nitrogen balance and prevents bacterial translocation and gut mucosal atrophy. Adequate EN is often not achieved as gastric feeds are not tolerated and placing postpyloric feeding tubes can be difficult. Spontaneous transpyloric passage of standard feeding tubes...

A significant number of neurosurgical patients require feeding tube placement via a nasogastric route. It is used as a temporary access for enteral feeding until patients are able to swallow or receive permanent access. Despite how commonly feeding tubes are used, they are not without potential complications. We report a case of inadvertent placement of small-bore feeding tube into the brain st...

T he need to avoid prolonged starvation in patients is well recognized. More recently, it has been realized that without intraluminal fuels, intestinal integrity may deteriorate and allow translocation of gut bacteria. One means to combat nutrient deprivation and simultaneously to keep the local defense barrier of the intestine intact is tube feeding, i.e., enteral nutrition. This technique has...
