We present a first experimental demonstration of a new method to extract a wellcollimated beam of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) from a storage vessel. Neutrons with too large divergence are not removed from the beam by an absorbing collimation, but a diffuse or semidiffuse channel with high Fermi potential reflects them back into the vessel. This avoids unnecessary losses and keeps the storage time...

We present the first measurements of the survival time of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in solid deuterium (SD2). This critical parameter provides a fundamental limitation to the effectiveness of superthermal UCN sources that utilize solid ortho-deuterium as the source material. These measurements are performed utilizing a SD2 source coupled to a spallation source of neutrons, providing a demonstra...

Corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF), which activates the hypothalamic-pituitary- adrenal axis under stress, also has proinflammatory peripheral effects possibly through mast cells. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of urocortin (UCN), a 40-amino-acid CRF family peptide, on degranulation and intracellular calcium of rat lung mast cells. The activation and degranulation of ...

We present the status of the development of a dedicated high density ultra-cold neutron (UCN) source dedicated to the gravitational spectrometer GRANIT. The source employs superthermal conversion of cold neutrons to UCN in superfluid helium. Tests have shown that UCN produced inside the liquid can be extracted into vacuum. Furthermore a dedicated neutron selection channel was tested to maintain...

Effects of the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) family of peptides are mediated through activation of two receptors, CRF receptor (CRFR) 1 and CRFR2. Based on the homology between known mammalian CRFR genes, we have isolated a cDNA encoding the mouse CRFR2alpha (mCRFR2alpha) ortholog from brain. The isolated cDNA encodes a 411-amino acid protein with high identity to the rat (approximately ...

At the Forschungs-Neutronenquelle Heinz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II) of Technical University Munich (TUM) a new source for ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) with solid deuterium converter is currently under construction. This summary paper shall give an overview project and its current status. Research results concerning preparation, para-to-ortho conversion, radiation effects neutron transport, which have ...

Ultracold neutrons provide a unique tool for the study of neutron properties. An overview is given ultracold (UCN) source at PSI, which produces highest UCN intensities to fundamental physics experiments by exploiting high intensity proton beam in combination with yield solid deuterium temperature 5 K. We briefly list important results based on measurements PSI.

Interactions between the Chk1 inhibitor UCN-01 and the farnesyltransferase inhibitor L744832 were examined in human leukemia cells. Combined exposure of U937 cells to subtoxic concentrations of UCN-01 and L744832 resulted in a dramatic increase in mitochondrial dysfunction, apoptosis, and loss of clonogenicity. Similar interactions were noted in other leukemia cells (HL-60, Raji, Jurkat) and pr...

BACKGROUND UCN-01 (7-hydroxy-staurosporine) is a novel antineoplastic agent targeting cyclin-dependent kinases, which shows potent in vitro and in vivo activity against a broad range of tumor types. Our group has previously shown that UCN-01 potentiates the apoptotic response of agents such as cisplatin in vitro by preventing sequence-specific abrogation of G2 arrest caused by DNA-damaging chem...

Solid deuterium (sD2) will be used for the production of ultra-cold neutrons (UCN) in a new generation of UCN sources. Scattering cross sections of UCN in sD2 determine the source yield but until now have not been investigated. We report first results from transmission and scattering experiments with cold, very cold and ultra-cold neutrons on sD2 along with light transmission and Raman scatteri...
