The process of cast explosive solidification molding has been dynamic monitored by multi-channel ultrasonic transmission method. It presents the regular pattern of ultrasonic attenuation, velocity and waveform in this process. The results show that velocity values and waveform are relative to solidification speed and physical characterization on the phase border, and ultrasonic attenuation is r...

The current work covers the evaluation of ultrasonic and electromagnetic (EM) techniques applied to temperature measurement and flow characterization for Enhanced Geothermal System (EGS). We have evaluated both ultrasonic techniques and microwave radiometry for temperature gradient and profile measurements. A waveguide-based ultrasonic probe was developed to measure the temperature gradient. A ...

Milk contaminated with melamine resulted in an important health hazard that affected many babies in China recently. Ultrasonic characterization of adulterated milk may detect gross levels of melamine contamination. Sound speed and density measurements were made in skim milk as a function of melamine adulteration. An ultrasonic measurement technique to implement milk quality control is discussed.

Mechanical Imaging (MI) is a branch of Elastography. MI differs from conventional ultrasonic and MR elastography in that it evaluates soft tissue mechanical structure using stress data rather than dynamic or static strain data. MI closely mimics manual palpation because the MI probe with a force sensor array attached to its tip acts as a palpating finger. MI is intrinsically a three-dimensional...

This effort explores the evolution and characterization of structural cracks in aircraft fuselage structures in which the loads are varying. During flight, an aircraft fuselage skin and structure are subjected to varied cyclic loads, which can cause embedded cracks and other damage features to change their characteristics due to loading effects. The current research uses finite element modeling...

BACKGROUND The purpose of this study was to compare the tissue effects of 3 surgical methods of glossectomy with respect to histopathologic assessment by a pathologist. METHODS The anterior tongue of 30 Sprague-Dawley rats was excised using either a steel scalpel, monopolar electrosurgery, or ultrasonic scalpel (3 groups of 10). Specimens were examined by a pathologist blinded to the surgical...

Attenuation estimation and imaging in the cervix has been utilized to evaluate the onset of cervical ripening during pregnancy. This feature has also been utilized for the acoustic characterization of leiomyomas and myometrial tissue. In this paper, we present direct narrowband substitution measurement values of the variation in the ultrasonic attenuation coefficient in ex vivo human uterine an...

A theoretical model was previously developed to evaluate the relationship between the dynamics of ultrasonic speckle and its underlying tissue. The model is divided into an instrumental part represented by the point spread function (in the far field) of the ultrasonic apparatus and a moving tissue component described by a collection of scatterers. By computing the convolution of these terms and...

A set of test samples, all containing ultrasonically equivalent tissue-mimicking material, was produced and measurements of ultrasonic speed and ultrasonic attenuation coefficients were made at seven laboratories using various techniques. The ultrasonic speed values agree well with one another, having a spread of about 0.3 per cent; thus, speed values for tissue parenchyma appearing in the lite...
