Wearable/portable biometric/physiological monitoring devices are rapidly becoming a recognized alternative in medicine, rehabilitation and sports. Developments in sensors, energy harvesting, embedded technology, smart textile, to mention a few, are driving the field to more seamless and complex solutions, sometimes part of pervasive strategies for activity monitoring. Additionally, the number o...

To recognize a context of a user, it is important to know a physical condition of the user and a status of his/her surrounding environment. For example, to maintain a healthcare condition of an elderly person, his/her care workers require monitoring not only his/her physiological conditions but also physical statuses of his/her surroundings, such as room temperatures. However, most approaches t...

The paper describes challenges of classifying and standardizing processes for context awareness systems for smart applications especially for fibre computing and wearable electronics. The focus will be on applications for intelligent fashion interfaces. One possibility for structuring new functions of embedded or wearable interfaces could be the 7 skin model. Thinking in the near future especia...

This paper describes the development of a wireless wearable controller, GO, for both sound processing and interaction with wearable lights. Pure Data is used for sound processing. The GO prototype is built using a PIC microcontroller using various sensors for receiving information from physical movements.

A practical implementation of a wearable physiological and environmental monitoring system is presented. The technical requirements for wearable electronics and sensors are analyzed. A proposed system includes micro and nano device design, wireless network based on TCP/IP protocol and software application. The result samples from monitoring in ambulatory environment are discussed.

Inspired by perception in biological systems, distribution of a massive amount of simple sensing devices is gaining more support in detection applications. A focus on fusion of sensor signals instead of strong analysis algorithms, and a scheme to distribute sensors, results in new issues. Especially in wearable computing, where sensor data continuously changes, and clothing provides an ideal su...

Neurological tremor is the most common movement disorder, affecting more than 4% of elderly people. Tremor is a non linear and non stationary phenomenon, which is increasingly recognized. The issue of selection of sensors is central in the characterization of tremor. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art instrumentation and methods of signal processing for tremor occurring in humans. We descr...

In this work, we consider ubiquitous health data generated from wearable sensors in a Ubiquitous Health Monitoring System (UHMS) and examine how these data can be used within privacypreserving distributed statistical analysis. To this end, we propose a secure multi-party computation based on a privacy-preserving cryptographic protocol that accepts as input current or archived values of users’ w...

This paper investigates the combined use of ambient and wearable sensing for inferring changes in patient behaviour patterns. It has been demonstrated that with the use of wearable and blob based ambient sensors, it is possible to develop an effective visualization framework allowing the observation of daily activities in a homecare environment. An effective behaviour modelling method based on ...

In this paper, we introduce a wearable robot with vital sensors. So far, we have been developing a wearable partner agent that makes physical contact, which is generated by combining haptic stimuli and the agent's anthropomorphic motions. The haptic stimuli are adjusted and controlled corresponding to the user's posture and surrounding context. However, neither is su cient to recognize the user...
