Analysis of various isolates of Plasmodium falciparum from East and West Africa and from South-east Asia showed that some of the parasite enzymes can exist in more than one electrophoretic form. At least one form of each enzyme was common to parasites from all three regions. The enzyme forms could be used to differentiate morphologically indistinguishable samples of P. falciparum.

The beginnings of agriculture in eastern Asia date to Neolithic times, 7000 to 9000 years ago, with rice cultivation about 4000 BCE. Agricultural origins in the Indus valley occur about the same time. In North China and Manchuria, a civilization was established about 2000 BCE and by the Zhou dynasty, 1000 BCE, there is evidence of canals and extensive irrigation. The writings of Confucius (551–...

In one of the first papers documenting active east-west extension in Tibet, Molnar and Tapponnier (1978) attributed the extension to gravitational spreading of its thick crust. England and Houseman (1989) related extension to rapid uplift of the Tibetan plateau caused by convective removal of the lower mantle lithosphere. Other workers have argued that east-west extension in southern Tibet refl...

The necrotizing disease occurs in parts of West Africa, Australia and Southeast Asia, affecting around 5,000 people each year [1]. Children aged under 15 are the most commonly infected demographic group and the region with the highest concentration of infections is, currently, Cote d'Ivoire. Until the late 1990s, when World Health Organization (WHO) programs began, the disease was a 'neglected ...

We present an analysis of the Asian outtow of CO, ozone, and nitrogen oxides (NO x) over the Paciic by using the GEOS-CHEM global 3-D model of tropospheric chemistry to simulate observations from the PEM-West B aircraft mission in February-March 1994. The GEOS-CHEM model uses assimilated meteorological elds from the NASA Goddard Earth Observing System (GEOS). It reproduces well the main feature...

The genotypes of 78 strains of Helicobacter pylori from Calcutta, India (55 from ulcer patients and 23 from more-benign infections), were studied, with a focus on putative virulence genes and neutral DNA markers that were likely to be phylogenetically informative. PCR tests indicated that 80 to 90% of Calcutta strains carried the cag pathogenicity island (PAI) and potentially toxigenic vacAs1 a...

The Roma people, living throughout Europe and West Asia, are a diverse population linked by the Romani language and culture. Previous linguistic and genetic studies have suggested that the Roma migrated into Europe from South Asia about 1,000-1,500 years ago. Genetic inferences about Roma history have mostly focused on the Y chromosome and mitochondrial DNA. To explore what additional informati...

Comparative phylogeography of African savannah mammals shows a congruent pattern in which populations in West/Central Africa are distinct from populations in East/Southern Africa. However, for the lion, all African populations are currently classified as a single subspecies (Panthera leo leo), while the only remaining population in Asia is considered to be distinct (Panthera leo persica). This ...

Background: Though low compared with those in Western countries, the incidence and prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) are rapidly increasing in Asia. If we could understand the differences in IBD epidemiology between Asian and Western countries, we might gain insights into the etiopathogenesis of IBD as well as guidance for personalized therapy. Summary: In Asia, unlike in the West,...
