In 1979 a Consensus Development Conference on removal of third molars was held at the National Institute of Dental Research,(National Institute of Health). (13) More than 200 practising dentists and scientists representing all disciplines within the profession met in an effort to reach general agreement on when and under what circumstances third molar extractions would be advised. They reached ...
BACKGROUND/AIM It is considered that the shortage of space is the major cause of the third molar impaction. The aim of this study was to establish the frequency of insufficient lower third molar eruption space in Serbian population, to question the differences in this frequency in the subjects of different age, to determine the influence of the lower third molar space (retromolar space) size on...
An unusual odontogenic cyst, which was originally believed to be a clinical dentigerous cyst associated with an impacted mandibular third molar, was found histologically to demonstrate the characteristics of a glandular odontogenic cyst with para- and orthokeratinization. These histologic diversities were interpreted as a reflection of the pluripotentiality of the epithelial remnants of the man...
As the hardest tissue in the body, teeth have the potential to offer a wealth of biological information to the forensic anthropologist, which can include the assessment of ancestry. Using a large data set of dental measurements, the efficacy of mesiodistal and buccolingual tooth dimensions to discriminate between broad, geographically based groups is explored. A general pattern is identified: A...
Two cases of inverted and impacted third molars are described. They were conservatively managed without surgery. Complications that may arise from surgical removal of inverted and impacted teeth must be carefully considered beforehand. These should be weighed against the benefit of surgical removal. The two cases are reported because impaction with inversion of a molar tooth is not common.
This study examined tooth size in a sample of thirty Northern Irish people with bimaxillary dental protrusion. The mesiodistal diameters of all permanent teeth (excluding second and third molars) were measured. The tooth sizes were compared with a control group who did not have bimaxillary dental protrusion. The results revealed that, on average, tooth size for the overall maxillary and mandibu...
Dentigerous cysts are the most common developmental cysts of the jaws, most frequently associated with impacted mandibular third molar teeth. Bilateral dentigerous cysts are rare and occur typically in association with a developmental syndrome. The reported occurrence of bilateral dentigerous cysts in the absence of a syndrome is rare and, to date, only 11 cases have been described. Here, we re...
The chronological distributions of enamel hypoplasias (indicators of nonspecific stress) are assessed for 111 individuals from two prehistoric populations from Dickson Mounds, Lewiston, Illinois. The earlier population (circa A.D. 950-1150) involves a transition from an indigenous gathering-hunting tradition to increasing adoption of Mississippian lifeways. The later population (circa A.D. 1150...
Third molar development was evaluated in 786 young people aged between 4 and 20 years, all patients at the School of Dentistry of the University of Granada. The development of third molars and of mandibular second premolars and second molars was determined according to the stages proposed by Nolla. The onset of mandibular third molar formation was observed at very variable ages in this series, ...
