Macrodefect-free single crystals of Yb-doped KGd(PO(3)), a noncentrosymmetric laser host which possesses second-order nonlinear susceptibility, were grown using the top seeded solution growth slow-cooling (TSSG-SC) technique, reaching a maximum ytterbium concentration in the crystal of approximately 3.2x10(20) at/cm(3). In order to evaluate the potential for self-frequency doubling, the dispers...

Lasing of Yb3+ in a disordered single crystal host, NaGd(WO4)2, is reported. Pump efficiencies as high as 20% and slope efficiencies as high as 30% are achieved for both sigma- and pi-polarizations with Ti:sapphire laser pumping. The emission of Yb:NaGd(WO4)2 is centered near 1030 nm. Tunability between 1016 and 1049 nm is obtained with a Lyot filter.

We present an experimental study of the lattice-induced light shifts on the (1)S(0) --> (3)P(0) optical clock transition (nu(clock) approximately 518 THz) in neutral ytterbium. The "magic" frequency nu(magic) for the 174Yb isotope was determined to be 394 799 475(35) MHz, which leads to a first order light shift uncertainty of 0.38 Hz. We also investigated the hyperpolarizability shifts due to ...

Currently, 31 dysprosium, 32 holmium, 32 erbium, 33 thulium and 31 ytterbium isotopes have been observed and the discovery of these isotopes is discussed here. For each isotope a brief synopsis of the first refereed publication, including the production and identification method, is presented. ∗Corresponding author. Email address: [email protected] (M. We have fabricated an ytterbium doped all-glass double-clad large mode area holey fiber. A highly efficient cladding pumped single transverse mode holey fiber laser has been demonstrated, allowing continuous-wave output powers in excess of 1W with efficiencies of more than 80%. Furthermore both Q-switched and mode-locked operation of the laser have been demonstrated.

A ytterbium-doped silica microcavity laser demonstrates stable laser emission while completely submerged in water. To our knowledge, it is the first solid-state laser whose cavity mode interacts with water. The device generates more than 2 microW of output power. The laser performance is presented, and low-concentration biosensing is discussed as a potential application.

The preparation of a series of homoleptic, four-coordinate lanthanide(ii) complexes, [Ln(Priso)(2)] (Ln = Sm, Eu or Yb) incorporating the bulky guanidinate ligand Priso(-) ([(ArN)(2)CNPr(i)(2)](-), Ar = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl) is described. X-ray crystallography shows the complexes to be isostructural and to exhibit coordination geometries midway between tetrahedral and planar. Comparisons betwe...

Atomic parity violation has been observed in the 6s(2 1)S(0)-->5d6s(3)D(1) 408-nm forbidden transition of ytterbium. The parity-violating amplitude is found to be 2 orders of magnitude larger than in cesium, where the most precise experiments to date have been performed. This is in accordance with theoretical predictions and constitutes the largest atomic parity-violating amplitude yet observed...

Two series of (Gd, Y, Yb)3Al2Ga3O12 quintuple compounds with a garnet structure and solely doped Ce Tb were prepared in the form ceramics by sintering oxygen at 1600 °C for two hours studied interaction activator ions ytterbium entering matrix. It was shown that photoluminescence scintillation Ce3+ are completely suppressed, predominantly tunneling ionization through charge transfer state (CTS)...

The adsorption of oxygen molecules on ytterbium nanofilms various thicknesses has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and contact potential difference measurements. It established that the maximum number O 2 can be adsorbed films increases with film thickness. Such behavior is observed at less than 10 monolayers. This size effect ultimately due to fact an indispensable condition fo...
