Previous evidence suggests the potential for adverse effects of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on metabolic health even at low-dose exposure levels common among the general population, but there is less evidence of these associations among children. Therefore, as part of a prospective cohort study, 214 children were measured for POPs exposure. After the 1-year follow-up, we assessed the e...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE Major risk factors for congestive heart failure (CHF) are myocardial infarction, hypertension, diabetes, atrial fibrillation, smoking, left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and obesity. However, since these risk factors only explain part of the risk of CHF, we investigated whether persistent organic pollutants (POPs) might also play a role. METHODS In the Prospective Inv...

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs), specifically PCBs, PBDEs, and DDTs, in the marine environment are well documented, however accumulation and mobilization patterns at the top of the food-web are poorly understood. This study broadens the understanding of POPs in the endangered Southern Resident killer whale population by addressing modulation by prey availability and reproductive status, al...

The paper offers an overview over selected results in the literature on partially ordered patterns (POPs) in permutations, words and compositions. The POPs give rise in connection with co-unimodal patterns, peaks and valleys in permutations, Horse permutations, Catalan, Narayana, and Pell numbers, bi-colored set partitions, and other combinatorial objects.

This article discusses the topics and ideas presented at the Special Session of the conference Dioxin 2008 (28th International Symposium on Halogenated Environmental Organic Pollutants and POPs) titled: "Emerging POPs". The session was devoted to emerging and re-emerging compounds or groups of compounds identified recently as environmental contaminants and classified as dioxin-like compounds or...

Computer simulations are used to design more hydrated bilayers, formed from amine-modified porphyrin-phospholipids (PoPs). Experiments confirm that the new constructs give rise to bilayers with greater water content. When chelated with manganese, amine-modified PoPs provide improved contrast for magnetic resonance and are safely used for imaging in vivo.

Among them, perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) is speculated to be highly persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) compound. Afterwards, PFOS and its synthetic starting material, perfluorooctyl sulfonyl fluoride (PFOSF), have been designated as persistent organic pollutants (POPs) by the Stockholm Convention on POPs in 2009. Therefore, to efficiently reduce PFC pollution, an understanding of P...

Chlorinated organic compounds, prevalent contaminants found in the geo-environment, pose an ecological risk even at trace concentrations. More volatile chlorinated compounds such as VOCs (volatile organic compounds) have been detected in urban areas and industrial zones because of the use of these compounds as components of industrial solvents and both raw and intermediate synthetic products. C...

INTRODUCTION The United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP) has been implemented in an effort to combat the release of selected persistent organic pollutants (POPs). POPs are found in environmental samples such as soils, sludges, solid and semisolid waste, and sediments. POPs are also found in biological samples such as human breast milk, and fish tissue. UNEP is interested in eliminating POPs...

Different approaches are used to verify the adequacy of emission factors (EFs) and their use in emission inventories of persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The applicability of EFs was tested using atmospheric dispersion modelling to predict atmospheric concentrations of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dibenzo-p-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCD...
