Neutral tetradentate halogen bond donor foldamers were synthesised and exhibit enhanced anion affinities over their hydrogen bonding analogues, displaying iodide selectivity over lighter halide, carboxylate and dihydrogen phosphate anions. A foldamer with a chiral (S)-binaphthol motif was demonstrated to distinguish between enantiomers of chiral anions.

Thermodynamic analyses and molecular dynamics calculations demonstrated that i-motifs in a hydrated ionic liquid of choline dihydrogen phosphate (choline dhp) were more stable than G-quadruplexes due to choline ion binding to loop regions in the i-motifs. Interestingly, the i-motifs formed even at physiological pH in the choline dhp-containing solution.

The presence of Pt(II) allows pre-organisation of 4,4'-dicarboxamidoindole-2,2'-bipyridine, enhancing anion affinity with the resulting complex displaying selectivity for dihydrogen phosphate in DMSO-d6-0.5% water. Moreover the Pt(II) complex behaves as a colorimetic sensor for fluoride.
