Investigating the genetic and physiological drivers of postweaning residual feed intake (RFI) and finishing phase feed efficiency (FE) may identify underlying mechanisms that are responsible for the variation in these complex FE traits. The objectives were 1) to evaluate the relationship of serum IGF-I concentration and muscle gene expression with postweaning RFI and sire maintenance energy (ME...

Strong antioxidant activity of Pelargonium graveolens is well known. The question addressed in this study was whether different concentrations of exogenous ascorbic acid (AsA) and iron (Fe) were able to influence antioxidant activity and total phenol content (TPC) of geranium. Thus, three levels of Fe (0, 20 and 40 µM) and three levels of AsA (0, 1 and 2 mM) in nutrient solution were c...

Microbial (Geobacter sulfurreducens) reduction of 0.1 mM U(VI) in the presence of synthetic Fe(III) oxides and natural Fe(III) oxide-containing solids was investigated in pH 6.8 artificial groundwater containing 10 mM NaHCO3. In most experiments, more than 95% of added U(VI) was sorbed to solids, so that U(VI) reduction was governed by reactions at the solid-water interface. The rate and extent...

The effect of foliar spray of different chemicals on the sorghum cultivar KH-333 in four type nutrient medium viz; normal pH, high pH, high bicarbonate (10 mM) and, high pH (8.0) &high bicarbonate (10 mM) on biochemical parameters and the recovery of iron chlorosis in fodder sorghum was examined. The effect of iron chlorosis and sulphydryl compounds on the antioxidant enzymes and active iron co...

The object of the present study is to investigate whether the physiologically dominant thiol compounds such as GSH and cysteine or their nitrosothiol compounds affect the formation of the iron- N -methyl-D-glucamine dithiocarbamate [(MGD)(2)Fe(2+)]-nitric oxide complex. The present study provided experimental evidence that physiological concentrations of GSH (approx. 5 mM) and L-cysteine (appro...

We evaluated the inducibility of nitrate-dependent Fe(II)-EDTA oxidation (NDFO) in non-growth, chloramphenicol-amended, resting-cell suspensions of Dechloromonas sp. strain UWNR4 and Acidovorax sp. strain 2AN. Cells previously incubated with Fe(II)-EDTA oxidized ca. 6-fold more Fe(II)-EDTA than cells previously incubated with Fe(III)-EDTA. This is the first report of induction of NDFO by Fe(II).

BACKGROUND Successful treatment of molar furcation defects remains a challenge in clinical practice. Knowledge of anatomic factors facilitates predictable management of furcation involvement lesions. The degree of success in managing furcation involvement is inversely related to the horizontal probing depth. The depth of the horizontal component of attachment loss can vary depending on the exte...

Immobilization of lipases has proved to be a useful technique for improving an enzyme's activity in organic solvents. In the present study, the performance of a silica-immobilized lipase was evaluated for the synthesis of isopropyl ferulate in DMSO. The biocatalyst was cross-linked onto the matrix with 1% glutaraldehyde. The effects of various parameters, molar ratio of ferulic acid to isopropy...

The magnetostrictive atomic strain in a pure Fe single crystal was measured by differential x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The obtained tetragonal magnetostriction constant, (3/2)λ100, was determined to be 45 ppm, consistent with the previously reported theoretical value calculated from a spin-orbit coupling theory. These results provide a foundation for understanding the origin of magnetostric...
