We describe the case of a pediatric patient with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) with an unusual large, fluid-filled intra-abdominal cystic lesion in which Pneumocystis carinii trophozoites were identified. We identified the incidence and primary clinical characteristics of histoplasmosis in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) in our hospital. Disseminated histoplasmosis is a common and severe disease among patients with AIDS in Panama and should be suspected for patients with a CD4 cell count of <100 cells/ microL, fever, respiratory symptoms, weight loss, and diarrhea.

Cerebral toxoplasmosis remains the most important neurological opportunistic infection and the most common cause of intracerebral mass lesion in patients with acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). We report a case of an adult AIDS patient with an atypical pattern of toxoplasma encephalitis, presenting with ventriculitis and obstructive hydrocephalus without any focal parenchymal lesion.
