We report the double functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotube electrodes by two functional pyrene molecules. In combination, an immobilized Ru(II)-based NADH oxidation catalyst and glucose dehydrogenase achieve highly efficient glucose oxidation with low overpotential of -0.10 V and high current densities of 6 mA cm(-2).

A template-engaged strategy is used to synthesize nanostructured metal phosphides with different compositions. Among the as-synthesized metal phosphides, nickel cobalt phosphides quasi-hollow nanocubes exhibit the best electrocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution reaction in terms of lower overpotential and smaller Tafel slope in alkaline solution.

A nanoporous gold film (NPGF) was prepared onto a gold electrode surface using a facile and green electrochemical approach via anodization at 2.0 V in 0.5 mol L(-1) H2SO4. The as-synthesized NPGF electrode showed superior electrocatalytic activity towards dissolved oxygen reduction at a low overpotential (-0.045 V) along with 2-fold enhanced sensitivity.

An iridium(III) trihydride complex supported by a pincer ligand with a hydrogen bond donor in the secondary coordination sphere promotes the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 to formate in water/acetonitrile with excellent Faradaic efficiency and low overpotential. Preliminary mechanistic experiments indicate formate formation is facile while product release is a kinetically difficult step.

Aryl-substituted tetraimine complexes related to Co(dmgBF(2))(2)(MeCN)(2) (dmg = dimethylglyoxime) were synthesized and are active for hydrogen evolution. Co(dmgBF(2))(2)(MeCN)(2) can be adsorbed to a glassy carbon electrode. The chemically modified electrode is active for hydrogen evolution in aqueous solution at pH < 4.5, with an overpotential of only 100 mV.
