A persistent pulmonary air leak, whether as a result of pulmonary surgery or as a result of a traumatic or spontaneous pneumothorax, is a difficult and frustrating problem to manage. Several therapies have been employed, including thoracotomy and repair of the air leak, prolonged tube thoracostomy suction, and chemical pleurodesis. We report two cases in which patients with a prolonged air leak...

A novel air-cleaner with a coil-shape photocatalysis-plasma synergistic reactor was developed. The air-cleaner showed 95% ± 1% reduction of a TVOCs concentration in tobacco smoke at “single-pass” condition. Air-purification activity of the air-cleaner was stably-maintained after the treatment of 12,000 cigarettes of tobacco smoke.

ublicly owned treatment works (POTWs) are beginning the process of identifying air emissions from their wastewater treatment and collection facilities. Many of these facilities will be required by local and state regulatory agencies to reduce emissions to meet air quality or health risks standards. Emissions include odors and toxic, reactive, volatile and criteria pollutants. A wide range of re...

BACKGROUND Leukotrienes have been implicated in the mediation of airway obstruction induced by hyperventilation of cold dry air in asthmatic subjects. The effect of a novel inhibitor of 5-lipoxygenase activating protein, BAYx 1005, on the bronchospastic response to cold dry air hyperventilation was investigated in asthmatic patients. METHODS After a screening cold dry air hyperventilation cha...

BACKGROUND Persistent air leak is one of the most common complications of lung diseases and pulmonary resections. Prolonged hospitalization, increased morbidity, and increased overall treatment costs arise from persistent air leaks. The use of endobronchial valves (EBVs) in the management of air leaks is an important alternative, especially for patients who are not candidates for surgical treat...

BACKGROUND Although there often is a clinical co-incidence of increased adiposity and obstructive sleep apnea, each factor is independently associated with elevated oxidative stress. OBJECTIVE We hypothesized that overweight rats exposed to simulated sleep apnea would develop exacerbated oxidative stress leading to impaired endothelium-dependent vasodilation. METHODS Rats were fed either a ...

In this study, polyethersulfone based nanofiltration membranes were modified by air plasma generated through dielectric barrier discharge to increase the membrane hydrophilicity aiming to improve the separation and antifouling characteristics. The effect of plasma time on the physico-chemical and separation properties of membrane was investigated. The PES nanofiltration membranes were fabricate...
