Gap junctions are present between nonpigmented and pigmented epithelial cells layers, as well as between the adjacent pigmented cells, but not between the nonpigmented epithelial cells which face the posterior chamber. The unusual feature of these gap junctions is a dark banding which regularly appears every three rows of subunits. This dark band is the equivalent width of two rows of facets.

PURPOSE To evaluate the effect of intravitreal azithromycin on the retina in a newborn rabbit model. METHODS Twelve, two-week old New Zealand albino rabbits were divided into two groups (six in each). The right eyes of six rabbits received 0.75 mg (0.05 mL) azithromycin and the right eyes of the remaining six rabbits 1.5 mg (0.1 mL) azithromycin intravitreally. Left eyes were served as the co...

From within an albino melanocyte line grown in vitro we identified and cloned cells that apparently had reverted to wild type. We sequenced a part of the tyrosinase gene, encompassing a candidate mutation, from wild-type, albino, and revertant cell DNAs. The revertant cells contain, on one chromosome, a perfect base reversion to the wild-type sequence of this candidate mutation, proving that th...

Visual evoked potential (VEP) asymmetry in which a preponderance of nasal and temporal retina afferents project to the contralateral hemisphere after full-field monocular stimulation is considered specific to albinism. Some reports, however, suggest that patients with congenital nystagmus (CN) share the albino-like visual pathway anomaly. To examine the clinical specificity of albino misrouting...

The effects of topical 0.5% timolol on tissue circulation in the albino rabbit optic nerve head (ONH) were investigated using a laser speckle tissue circulation analyzer. In the first experiment, the normalized blur (NB) value, a quantitative index of tissue blood flow velocity in the ONH, intraocular pressure (IOP), blood pressure, and pulse rate were measured under general anesthesia before, ...

PURPOSE To investigate the effect and safety of benzalkonium chloride on transscleral drug delivery in the rabbit after continuous intrascleral administration. METHODS Betamethasone 21-phosphate (BP) aqueous solutions, with or without benzalkonium chloride (BAK), were continuously administered to albino rabbit sclera with an osmotic pump for 1 week. The BP concentrations in the aqueous humor,...

OBJECTIVES To characterize the uptake, washout, and metabolism of lidocaine hydrochloride in the iris/ciliary body and cornea. METHODS Iris/ciliary body uptake of lidocaine hydrochloride was measured by incubating human and rabbit irides in radiolabeled carbon 14-1% lidocaine hydrochloride for 2 to 60 minutes. Washout was determined by incubating the iris in 14C-1% lidocaine hydrochloride for...

INTRODUCTION Allergies are a problem that greatly affects the population, and hence the use of antiallergic medications is fairly widespread. However, these drugs have many adverse effects. The use of medicinal plants could be an option, but they need to be evaluated. OBJECTIVE This study was designed to evaluate the antiallergic effect of the atomized extract of rhizome of Curcuma longa, flo...

PURPOSE Using an established rabbit toxicological model, this in vivo study compared the ocular cytotoxicity of four topical intraocular pressure (IOP)-lowering agents: the commercial benzalkonium chloride (BAC)-containing solutions of 0.005% latanoprost, 0.004% travoprost, 0.03% bimatoprost (containing 0.02%, 0.015%, and 0.005% BAC, respectively), and 0.005% latanoprost in a new cationic emuls...
