Hookworms are hematophagous nematodes that infect a wide range of mammalian hosts, including humans. There has been speculation for nearly a century as to the identity of the anticoagulant substances) used by these organisms to subvert host hemostasis. Using molecular cloning, we describe a family of potent small protein (75-84 amino acids) anticoagulants from the hookworm Ancylostoma caninum t...

Parasitic infections may damage various ocular tissues, thereby causing visual dysfunction. In 1950, Wilder described the first case in which larval forms of nematodal intestinal roundworms (Ascaridoidea: Ascaris, Toxocara, Ancylostoma, Necator, and Strongyloides) were implicated as a cause of intraocular disease. This review focuses on two disorders associated with parasitic infections: ocular...

A case of massive Ancylostoma sp. larval infestation is presented in a patient who had received systemic corticosteroid therapy. What attracts attention in this case is the exuberance and rarity of clinical manifestation. Based on the pertinent literature, we discuss the mechanisms of parasital infection, the natural history of the disease and its treatment.

" Even in cases of so-called beri-beri is the presence of the anchylostoma in them convincing evidence that they alone cause tbe disease and in the way suggested ? I think not."?Surg.-Major Dobson, Assam.?Report, 1892,^;. 66. " I altogether doubt the existence of any specific disease to which the term ankylostomiasis can be justly applied. * * * I maintain that it has yet to be shown that the p...

We report the occurrence of nematodes collected from the gut of roadkilled crab-eating foxes (two adult males and one juvenile female), Cerdocyon thous (Linnaeus, 1766), found on the BR 262 highway in Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil in 2011. Three helminth species were identified: Ancylostoma buckleyi, Pterygodermatites (Multipectines) pluripectinata, and Ascaridia galli. These nematodes are r...

Sir, Cutaneous larva migrans are lesions that migrate or creep on the skin and are due to the presence of moving parasites in the skin. It is also known as creeping eruption, sandworm eruptions, plumber’s itch, and duck hunter’s itch. Causative larvae are from Ancylostoma braziliense, Ancylostoma caninum, Ancylostoma ceylonicum, Uncinaria stenocephala, and Bunostomum phlebotomum.[1] In humans, ...

Although hookworm is highly prevalent in the Solomon Islands, the species involved are unknown. We initiated this study in response to finding Ancylostoma ceylanicum hookworm in a peacekeeper in Australia who had returned from the Solomon Islands. Kato-Katz fecal surveys performed in 2013 and 2014 in 2 village groups in East Malaita, Solomon Islands, identified hookworm-positive samples. These ...
