In this paper, we address the problem of predicting the location of amyloidogenic regions in proteins. The language of protein sequence can be described by using a formal system such as fuzzy context-free grammar, and the problem of amyloidogenic region recognition can be replaced by fuzzy grammar induction. The induced fuzzy grammar achieved 70.6% accuracy and 96.7% specificity on a recently p...
The parsing schemata formalism allows us to describe parsing algorithms in a simple way by capturing their fundamental semantics while abstracting low-level detail. In this work, we present a compilation technique allowing automatic transformation of parsing schemata to executable implementations of their corresponding algorithms. Taking a simple description of a schema as input, our technique ...
We propose an algebra of languages and transformations as a means for extending languages syntactically. The algebra provides a layer of high-level abstractions built on top of languages (captured by context-free grammars) and transformations (captured by constructive catamorphisms). The algebra is self-contained in that any term of the algebra specifying a transformation can be reduced to a ca...
Automatic recognition of human activities and behaviors is still a challenging problem due to many reasons, including limited accuracy of the data acquired by sensing devices, high variability of human behaviors, gap between visual appearance and scene semantics. Symbolic approaches can significantly simplify the analysis, turning raw data into chains of meaningful patterns. This allows getting...
A grammar-compressed (GC) string is a string generated by a context-free grammar. This compression model captures many practical applications, and includes LZ78 and LZW compression as a special case. We give an efficient algorithm for threshold approximate matching on a GC-text against a plain pattern. Our algorithm improves on existing algorithms whenever the pattern is sufficiently long. The ...
A subpansive tree is a rooted tree that gives a partial order of nonterminal symbols of a context-free grammar. We formalize subpansive trees as background knowledge of CFGs, and investigate query learning of CFGs with the help of subpansive trees. We show a restricted class of CFGs, which we call hierarchical CFGs, is efficiently learnable, while it is unlikely to be polynomial-time predictable.
Many rewriting systems with context-free productions and with controlled derivations have been studied. On one hand, these systems preserve the simplicity of applications of context-free productions and, on the other hand, they increase the generative power to cover more aspects of natural and programming languages. However, with λ-productions, many of these systems are computationally complete...
In this paper wc first outline why pupils should be given the opportunity to visit and havc direct contact with the cultural heritage. We then propose some 'didactic itineraries' organized by museums and other cultural institutes which are aimed at specific subjects and ages of pupils. We illustrate the main organizational aspects and the people involved in the various stages of the project. 11...
In this paper we prove that for any m E {I, 2, 3}, the dicyclic group B 4n (n i=2) is an m-DCI group if and only if n is odd.
Context-awareness is the ability of computing systems to acquire and reason about the situational context and adapt application accordingly. Context-aware system start with gathering of raw, low-level contextual data, interpret the raw contextual data into high-level interpreted context, reason the interpreted context to derive implications and adapt the application behaviour on the basis of th...
