The residual activities of transgenic corn-derived and 2 commercial microbial phytases (PA and PB) along the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of laying hens were compared to evaluate their relative resistance to hydrolysis in the GIT when added to P-deficient diets. The treatments consisted of a negative control (NC) diet containing 0.10 nonphytate P and an NC diet supplemented with transgenic corn...
The residual phytase activity, phytic acid P content, and microstructure of the digesta along the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) of broiler chickens fed a corn expressing microbial phytase was studied in a 14-d experiment. The phytase activity of the corn expressing phytase (CBP) was determined to be 660 phytase units/g and was incorporated into broiler diets at varying rates. One hundred forty-f...
Most studies that have examined mercury (Hg) contamination of fish have focused on game species feeding near the top of the food web, while studies that examine forage fish that feed near the base of the food web are rare. We conducted a survey of Hg contamination in three species of forage fish, brook silverside (Labidesthes sicculus), threadfin shad (Dorosoma petenense) and gizzard shad (Doro...
This work focused on the investigation and evaluation of the single or individual effects of feed-inoculum ratio, temperature, and agitation speed (i.e. operating variables) on biomethanization of the mixture of cattle manure, pig manure and poultry manure (mixed animal wastes) co-digested with pineapple fruit waste and content of chicken-gizzard (inoculum) as well as to model the kinetics of b...
This study reports the complete genome sequence of fowl aviadenovirus A strain JM1/1, which caused gizzard erosions in broilers occurring in Japan. The JM1/1 genome is 43,809 bp in length and most closely related to the strain chicken embryo lethal orphan (CELO); moreover, multiple site insertions and deletions were found.
WL iLLiAM B. BULL AND ALAN F. Cooper (1) identify as marine terrace remnants 18 "notches" or steps at altitudes up to 1700 m on the ridge crests southeast of the Alpine fault, New Zealand. They infer late Quatemary uplift rates on this upthrown side of the fault at three study areas. Their conclusions are based on (i) morphology ofthe steps, which are said to resemble eroded marine cliffs and s...
effect of natural zeolites and nano-zeolite on gut flora, tibia bone characteristics, blood parameters and performance of broilers investigated with 336 male ross 308 broilers chicks allocated to seven treatments with four replicates and 12 chicks per each. experimental treatments were control (no zeolite supplemented), natural zeolite (0.5, 1 and 1.5 percent) and nano-zeolite (0.5, 1 and 1.5...
Cross-linking of actin filaments (F-actin) into bundles and networks was investigated with three different isoforms of the dumbbell-shaped alpha-actinin homodimer under identical reaction conditions. These were isolated from chicken gizzard smooth muscle, Acanthamoeba, and Dictyostelium, respectively. Examination in the electron microscope revealed that each isoform was able to cross-link F-act...
Five single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of the chicken insulin-like factor binding protein 2 (IGFBP2) gene were selected to genotype a F2 designed population with restriction fragment length polymorphisms and single stranded-conformation polymorphisms. The associations of the SNP and their haplotypes with chicken growth and carcass traits were analyzed. Results showed that the difference ind...
