Objectives: To evaluate the use of APACHE II (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Status Evaluation) in Chinese patients managed in the resuscitation room of an Accident & Emergency Department of one of the teaching hospitals in Hong Kong. Design: Prospective study on Chinese patients. Setting: Resuscitation Room in an Accident & Emergency Department of a university hospital in Hong Kong. Patie...

INTRODUCTION Presepsin levels are known to be increased in sepsis. The aim of this study was to evaluate the early diagnostic and prognostic value of Presepsin compared with procalcitonin (PCT), Mortality in Emergency Department Sepsis (MEDS) score and Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) score in septic patients in an emergency department (ED) and to investigate Presep...

BACKGROUND Our purpose was to assess the performance of general severity systems (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation [APACHE], Simplified Acute Physiology Score [SAPS], and Mortality Probability Models [MPM]) and to compare them with the Parsonnet score to predict mortality after cardiac surgery. METHODS AND RESULTS This was a prospective observational study of 465 cardiac surgery...

BACKGROUND Previous studies have suggested that prediction models for mortality should be adjusted for additional risk factors beyond the Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE) score. Our objective was to identify risk factors independent of APACHE II score and construct a prediction model to improve the predictive accuracy for hospital and intensive care unit (ICU) mortality. ...

The APACHE (Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation) scoring system is time consuming. The mean time for introducing a patient's data to APACHE IV is 37.3 min. Nevertheless, statisticians have known for years that the higher the number of variables the mathematical model describes, the more accurate the model. Because of the necessity of gathering data over a 24-hour period and of determ...

Results We studied 119 patients. Mean age: 44.42 ± 13.85 years. Drug intoxication in 77.3% of patients, alcohol in 16.8% and caustic 9.2%. 78.3% was a suicide attempt. The mean Glasgow Coma Scale in 72.5% were < 8 points. 69.7% required mechanical ventilation. The mortality of patients hospitalized for caustic ingestion was 54.5% and 1.9% in the rest (p < 0.001). The multivariate analysis showe...

INTRODUCTION Predictive models, such as acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE-II), are widely used in intensive care units (ICUs) to estimate mortality. Although the presence of delirium is associated with a higher mortality in ICU patients, delirium is not part of the APACHE-II model. The aim of the current study was to evaluate whether delirium, present within 24 hours aft...
