Learning ecosystems provide a combination of technologies and support resources available to help individuals learn within an environment [1]. The Experience API (xAPI) is an enabling specification for learning ecosystems, which provides a method for producing interoperable data that can be shared within a learning ecosystem [2]. Version 4.1 of the Generalized Intelligent Framework for Tutoring...

In this paper we present Tworpus, an easy-to-use tool for the creation of tailored Twitter corpora. Tworpus allows scholars to create corpora without having to know about the Twitter Application Programming Interface (API) and related technical aspects. At the same time our tool complies with Twitter’s ”rules of the road” on how to use tweet data. Corpora may be composed in various sizes and fo...

Can widget technologies revolutionize the VLE and challenge the dominant design of elearning? The authors describe an experimental implementation of the Moodle VLE using the W3C Widget specification and Google Wave Gadget API to replace existing core features. Innovation in the network is notoriously difficult due to the need to support legacy applications. We argue that this difficulty stems from the API used to access the network. The ubiquitous Sockets API lets applications choose from a number of communication mechanisms, but binds them tightly to their chosen mechanism (e.g. specifying a destination using IPv4). Applications must therefore be mo...

In this demo we present an extension of SPARQL which allows queries to connect to JSON APIs and integrate the obtained information into query answers. We achieve this by adding a new operator to SPARQL, and implement this extension on top of the Jena framework in order to illustrate how it functions with real world APIs.

In the present work, we compare samples of tweets from the Twitter Streaming API that were constructed from different connections tracking the same popular keywords at the same time. We find that tweets from the Streaming API are not sampled at random; rather, on average over 96% of the tweets seen in one sample are seen in all others. Somewhat surprisingly, however, tweets found only in a subs...

The aggregation of web performance (page count and visibility) of internal university units could constitute a more precise indicator than the overall web performance of the universities and, therefore, be of use in the design of university web rankings. In order to test this hypothesis, a longitudinal analysis of the internal units of the Spanish university system was conducted over the course...
