We report on the application of a novel all-solid-state violet laser diode source to confocal microscopy. The source has the potential to replace argon ion lasers in a range of fluorescence based imaging systems. Improvements in system performance and image quality through the use of anamorphic prisms to modify the beam profile have been characterised. These modifications have permitted high qu...

We present a case of transpupillary argon laser cyclophotocoagulation (TALC) in a patient with traumatic aniridia and aphakia secondary to blunt trauma who had previous bilateral trabeculectomy. Four months after the trauma the patient's intraocular pressure (IOP) rose to 35 mmHg despite topical antiglaucomatous medication. Inferior 180 degrees cyclophotocoagulation was performed with transpupi...

A group of 20 patients (28 eyes) with proliferative retinopathy who required extensive argon laser photocoagulation to induce regression of new vessels is presented. The mean number of burns applied to each eye was 7225, with a maximum of 11,513. These were delivered in a mean of nine sessions over a mean period of 22.9 months. Twenty-five eyes (89%) had a final visual acuity of 6/18 or better....

The energy absorption and laser propagation characteristics of air and argon sparks at one atmosphere have been investigated. To create the sparks, 532 nm pulses from a frequency doubled Q-switched Nd : YAG laser are used. We employed 2 ns gated fast photography for studying the time evolution of the kernel at early times. Optical emission spectroscopy is used to infer temperature and density o...

The compression of 300-fs-long, chirp-free laser pulses at 527 nm down to 30 fs is reported. The laser pulses, originated from a frequency-doubled, mode-locked Nd:glass laser, were compressed by a 0.7-m-long, 150-microm-bore-diameter, argon-filled hollow fiber, and a pair of SF10 prisms with a final energy of 160 microJ. These are the shortest, high energy pulses ever produced by direct pulse c...

Laser micro-irradiation of cell inclusions has become a useful method in cell biology (1). A pulsed ruby laser microbeam system has been successfully used to study morphological and functional relationships within mitochondria of tissue culture cells vitally stained with Janus green B (2-6) . Recently, an argon ion gas laser microbeam has been used to place lesions on mitotic chromosomes of sal...

PURPOSE Because of the potential usefulness of evaluating and treating choroidal neovascularization obscured by blood, we designed this study to quantify the transmission of dye fluorescence and laser energy through blood. METHODS Blood preparations anticoagulated with ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid with hematocrits of 0% (plasma), 46%, and 99% were placed in open cuvettes with path lengths ...
