The Coordinate Rotation DIgital Computer (CORDIC) algorithm has been used for many years for efficient implementation of vector rotation operations in hardware. It is executed merely by table look-up, shift, and addition operations. Thus, the corresponding hardware can be implemented in very economic fashion. Subsequently, it has been applied for many performances.CORDIC has been implemented in...

Fractal analyses have been applied successfully for the image compression, texture analysis, and texture image segmentation. The fractal dimension could be used to quantify the texture information. In this study, the differences of gray value of neighboring pixels are used to estimate the fractal dimension of an ultrasound image of breast lesion by using the fractal Brownian motion. Furthermore...

In this paper we present compiler-assisted checkpointing, a new technique which uses static program analysis to optimize the performance of checkpointing. We achieve this performance gain using libckpt, a checkpointing library which implements memory exclusion in the context of user-directed checkpointing. The correctness of user-directed checkpointing is dependent on program analysis and inser...

—LTE Licensed-Assisted Access (LAA) to unlicensed spectrum has been considered as an effective complement in offloading growing traffic since its emergence at 3GPP. Since 2015, 3GPP has launched standardization to develop LAA as a key technology for LTE-Advanced unlicensed spectrum deployment in Rel-13. In this paper, an analytical model is built for the performance evaluation of typical coexi...

Among the many challenges in getting BlueGene/L into production was the initial under-performance of the Lustre-based parallel file system. This report focuses on the role of visualization tools that assisted in understanding and improving performance. The authors were able to bring about a two-fold increase in the delivered I/O performance.

We can adapt existing techniques for the statistical modeling of music to the modeling of the quality of musical performance, resulting in a fine-grained statistical understanding of ’hardness’ in music performance. This drives AI-assisted applications for improving skill. We present modeling results using various probabilistic models to model performance in the simplified setting of rhythm games.

Technological developments in imaging guidance, intraoperative imaging, and microscopy have pushed neurosurgeons to the limits of their dexterity and stamina. The introduction of robotically assisted surgery has provided surgeons with improved ergonomics and enhanced visualization, dexterity, and haptic capabilities. This article provides a historical perspective on neurosurgical robots, includ...

Genetic Algorithm (GA) assisted beamforming techniques are proposed as an alternative to conventional beamforming algorithms. The design of the corresponding GAs is highlighted and the achievable performance is characterised in terms of the Signal-to-Interference Ratio (SIR) and the Signal-to-Interference plus Noise Ratio (SINR). It is demonstrated that an attractive SINR versus complexity trad...
