We investigate the emission spectra from the edge of optically pumped waveguide. The waveguide is based on vacuum-deposited thin films of small molecular, 2,5,2',5'-tetrakis(2,2-diphenylvinyl)biphenyl (TDPVBi). Narrowed emissions are observed both at high (> 6 KW/cm2) and low (< 1 W/cm2) pump power sources, which are attributed to two different propagation modes in the asymmetric slab waveguide...

The incidence of thin-film-guided, in-plane unguided waves at oblique angles on straight discontinuities of dielectric slab waveguides, an early problem of integrated optics, is being reconsidered. The 3-D frequency domain Maxwell equations reduce to a parametrized inhomogeneous vectorial problem on a 2-D computational domain, with transparent-influx boundary conditions. We propose a rigorous v...

In this article, we apply the coupled-mode theory to vertically-coupled micro-disk resonators presenting an asymmetric distribution of refractive index and a multilayer separation region between the two waveguide cores, resulting in an effective propagation constant phase-mismatch in the coupling region. We introduce a criterion which, given the coupler overall permittivity distribution, clarif...

Room-temperature continuous-wave ~cw! operation is demonstrated with InGaN multiple-quantum-well laser diodes containing an asymmetric waveguide structure. Pulsed threshold current densities as low as 5.2 kA/cm have been obtained for ridge-waveguide laser diodes grown on sapphire substrates by metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. For improved thermal management, the sapphire substrate was t...

We study the statistics of the reflectance (the ratio of reflected and incident intensities) of an N -mode disordered waveguide with weak absorption γ per mean free path. Two distinct regimes are identified. The regime γN ≫ 1 shows universal fluctuations. With increasing length L of the waveguide, the variance of the reflectance changes from the value 2/15N, characteristic for universal conduct...

Based on the well-known electron coherent tunneling phenomenon, by simulation, a photonic tunneling filter fabricated in an optical waveguide is proposed. The Bragg grating structure is applied as the photonic barrier. Two photonic barriers confine a coherent resonance cavity or photon-quantum-well. We report an asymmetric-barrier structure with opposite phase. In this configuration, the centra...

We consider dissipative Dyakonov plasmon-polaritons as surface waves propagating along the plane boundary of a hyperbolic metamaterial with an arbitrary orientation crystallographic axis. Conditions for existence fast, slow, gliding flowing, forward and backward are found. A waveguide in form asymmetric layer is also considered. An expression density electromagnetic energy such given.

We demonstrate a microcantilever array with an in-plane photonic transduction method for simultaneous readout of each microcantilever. The array is fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator substrate. Rib waveguides in conjunction with a compact waveguide splitter network comprised of trench-based splitters and trench-based bends route light from a single optical input to each microcantilever on the...

We propose a compact polarization beam splitter (PBS) based on a silicon nitride enhanced silicon-on-insulator platform using an augmented low-index guiding (ALIG) waveguide structure. In the ALIG structure, the TM mode is mostly confined in the low-index silicon nitride, while the TE mode is confined in the high-index silicon. Since the two modes are confined in two separate layers, their prop...

We present and validate a semianalytical quasi-normal mode (QNM) theory for the local density of states (LDOS) in coupled photonic crystal (PhC) cavity-waveguide structures. By means of an expansion of the Green's function on one or a few QNMs, a closed-form expression for the LDOS is obtained, and for two types of two-dimensional PhCs, with one and two cavities side-coupled to an extended wave...
