the most frequent congenital heart defects in the neonatal period are ventricular septal defects. ventricular septal aneurysms can rarely develop from an interventricular septal (ivs) defect in adults. we describe a 47-year-old man with an aneurysm in the ivs growing towards the right ventricle, which was confirmed by cardiac computed tomographic angiography and was missed by echocardiography.

A 35 year-old woman with a restrictive ventricular septal defect and an atrial septal aneurysm was admitted to our clinic. The patient reported mildly limited physical activity and palpitations. Transthoracic echocardiography showed an enlarged left ventricle and left atrium. The size of the right heart cavities was normal. The structure of both ventricle walls revealed a compact epicardial lay...

An 84-year-old woman with hypertension presented to our medical center with dyspnea and lower extremity edema. Electrocardiography demonstrated atrial fibrillation with a rapid ventricular response. Transthoracic echocardiography color Doppler showed abnormal flow in the region of the interatrial septum (Fig. 1A). Transesophageal echocardiography demonstrated a defect adjacent to the interatria...

ALTHOUGH atrial septal defect is onle of the commllonlest of the congenital heart lesions, and the anatomical features have been recognised since the early nineteenth century, it is only in the last thirty years that a clearly defined clinical picture has emerged (Roesler, 1934; Bedford Papp and Parkinson, 1941). Precision in diagnosis came with the use of cardiac catheterization (Wood, 1950; D...

Transoesophageal cross-sectional echocardiography has special advantages when investigating the interatrial septum which is imaged perpendicularly without echo dropouts from an oesophageal transducer position. The technique was successfully used in 19 out of 20 patients (95%) with an ostium secundum atrial septal defect and in 30 control subjects. In all of the latter the interatrial septum was...

UNLABELLED The case report of a 15-year-old patient with an unusual form of atrial septal defect is described. Echocardiography showed separation of the secundum and primum atrial septums due to abnormal posterior and leftward attachment of the primum septum into the roof of the left atrium. The morphology has been variably described as a 'double' atrial septum or 'spiral' atrial septal defect....
