During a 4-year period (2001-2005) 09 animals were surgically treated because of abdominal wall defects (hernia). Out of 9 animals 8 were bovines and one caprine. In each case the defect was repaired with carbon fibre mesh. All the cases were successfully treated and no complication was observed up to six months postoperatively.
The purpose of this commentary is to highlight the anti-inflammatory properties of polar lipids present in ovine and caprine milk and its derivatives (i.e. dairy products such as yogurt and cheese). These lipids inhibit the onset of atherosclerosis and thus promote cardiovascular health. We suggest that further research could focus on the elucidation and bioavailability of these lipids.
Serum samples of 562 goats were tested for Caprine arthritis-encephalitis using agar gel immunodiffusion test (AGID) and enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Seventy-nine samples (14.1%) were reactive by both testes but 141 (25.1%) were reactive only by ELISA. ELISA, when compared to AGID, presented 100% sensitivity and 70.8% specificity.
In situ hybridisation, polymerase chain reaction as well as L1 antigen immunolabelling indicated the presence of Papillomavirus in tumour samples of twin goats. These findings suggest that caprine PVs may play a role in cutaneous and ocular tumour development, similarly to what has been suggested for humans.
