Episodes of transient loss of consciousness (TLOC) are commonly due to syncope or epileptic seizures. The distinction between both entities on clinical grounds and eyewitness accounts can be challenging and is often hampered by similar clinical features. We briefly summarize syncope-related symptoms and present the case of a female patient who suffered from TLOC episodes due to both reflex sync...
OBJECTIVE Study the prevalence of neurocardiogenic etiology in patients with unexplained syncope and ventricular premature beats, with right ventricle outflow tract morphology (RVOT) and no apparent structural cardiopathy. METHODS Ninety patients (66 women, mean age 40.2 +/- 16.95 years of age) with monomorphic premature beats originated at RVOT were evaluated prospectively. Fifty-four patien...
BACKGROUND Syncope, the sudden transient loss of consciousness due to multiple etiologies, usually has worse outcomes in African Americans compared with other races because of other comorbidities. This study aims to identify a correlation between the etiologies of syncope and age in a predominantly African-American sample population to facilitate future investigations with potentially improved ...
BACKGROUND The management of long-QT syndrome (LQTS) patients who continue to have cardiac events (CEs) despite beta-blockers is complex. We assessed the long-term efficacy of left cardiac sympathetic denervation (LCSD) in a group of high-risk patients. METHODS AND RESULTS We identified 147 LQTS patients who underwent LCSD. Their QT interval was very prolonged (QTc, 543+/-65 ms); 99% were sym...
Syncope is defined as a sudden temporary loss of consciousness and postural tone that is associated with spontaneous recovery. Vasovagal or neurocardiogenic syncope is a common and usually benign cause of syncope. The mechanism may be cardioinhibitory, vasodepressor, or both. Diagnosis is usually made by a typical patient history with a definite trigger. Although vasovagal syncope is considered...
We present a case of cardiac capillary hemangioma in a patient who presented with a history of recurrent episodes of syncope. Cardiovascular magnetic resonance played an important role in the diagnosis of cardiac hemangioma in our patient.
primary cardiac tumors are quite rare, especially in the pediatric age group, and their atypical presentations often prevent a timely diagnosis. most primary cardiac tumors in the pediatric age group are benign. fibromas are generally reported as the second most common primary cardiac tumors in the pediatric age group. these neoplasms are often intramural and involve the left ventricular free w...
The n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), have antiarrhythmic effects, possibly via modulation of the cardiac ion channels. Nevertheless, it is unknown whether low serum levels of n-3 PUFAs are risk factors for ventricular fibrillation in patients with Brugada syndrome (BrS). We retrospectively reviewed data from 62 men wi...
This report shows that thyroid hormone disturbance has a significant role in the development of cardiovascular sign and symptom in the thyroid patients. And those Cardiac conduction disturbances, namely atrial fibrillation and atrioventricular block, have a role with cardiogenic syncope in non-epileptic patient. We report a patient with hypothyroidism diagnosed with atrioventricular block who d...
A 10 year old girl with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) developed high grade atrioventricular (A-V) block unexpectedly, which instantly led to syncope; she required a permanent pacemaker. High grade A-V block, a rare complication of HCM, relates closely to syncope or sudden death in this disease and if progressive the use of cardiac pacing should be considered without delay.
