Despite its unparalleled success in the field of surgery, the precise mechanism of ultrasonic phacoemulsification cataract extraction remains controversial. We review the relevant peer-reviewed literature on the subject of power generation and tip-tissue interactions to clarify the current status of our knowledge. We conclude that phacoemulsification most likely operates by a combination of mec...

BACKGROUND Experimental animal studies have shown adverse effects of high-dose vitamin C supplements on age-related cataract. OBJECTIVE We examined whether vitamin C supplements (approximately 1000 mg) and multivitamins containing vitamin C (approximately 60 mg) are associated with the incidence of age-related cataract extraction in a population-based, prospective cohort of women. DESIGN Ou...

In the management of waiting lists, point systems could be a useful mechanism to establish priorities amongst patients. In this paper we explore the possibility of using Conjoint Analysis (CA) in order to implement a point system based on social preferences. We conducted an experiment for the specific case of cataract extraction. In spite of the pilot nature of the study the results seems to su...

It is hardly debatable that poverty and poor health, however one measures either of these broad concepts, often exist together. Blindness, the most important manifestation of poor eye health, is no exception. World Health Organization estimates show higher rates of visual impairment in poorer countries, with few exceptions [1], and a recent large population-based survey in Pakistan found an ass...

There are many techniques of cataract extraction and many types of cataract knives have been devised to facilitate an ideal section. Ultrasharp diamond knives were introduced by Durham and Luntz (I968). Sharpness is essential whether the von Graefe knife, the keratome, or corneal scissors are used, and for this reason disposable cataract knives, keratomes, and Bard Parker blades are widely used...

A prospective study was carried out to estimate the incidence and severity of ptosis following cataract extraction and trabeculectomy. A postoperative ptosis of 2 mm or more was found in 6.2% of all cases. In this series the incidence of ptosis following surgery under local anaesthesia was greater than that under general anaesthesia. The aetiology and management of this complication are discussed.
