Cell walls were prepared mechanically from both hyphae and conidia of Penicillium chrysogenum. The major carbohydrate components of cell wall hydrolysates were glucose, galactose and glucosamine, with lesser amounts of mannose and rhamnose. The conidia were richer in galactose and the hyphae contained more glucosamine. The distribution of the monomers in acidsoluble and alkali-soluble fractions...

The refractive index of soybean (Glycine max [L.] Merr.) leaf cell walls was measured by two methods. The refractive index of fully hydrated walls in the living leaf was about 1.415, while that of dried cell walls was about 1.53. The refractive index of the external surface of the living leaf hair was 1.48.

We examined the effects of polyphenols on the analysis of lignin by histochemical methods, namely, the Mäule color reaction coupled with microspectrophotometry and ultraviolet microspectrophotometry, in wood of Eucalyptus camaldulensis and E. globulus. Thin sections and wood meals were extracted with solutions of alkali at different concentrations. The amounts of alkali-soluble extractives incr...

Plant cells have been reported to play an important role in the uptake of organic contaminants. This study was undertaken to provide an insight into the role of the root cell walls and their subfractions on sorption of phenanthrene to roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Root cell walls were isolated and further sequentially fractioned by removing pectin, hemicellulose one, and hemicellulose ...
