Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) affects the B-cells of the immune system and is, as the most common leukemia in adults, an important hematological differential diagnosis. It often hardly progresses for years and therefore a CLL does not always need immediate therapy. In the past years especially, a lot has happened with regard to diagnostic options and treatment, so that being informed about...

The factors that contribute to the development of B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) are unknown, and the groups of individuals at the greatest risk for developing this common leukemia are not well defined. Molecular features are important for classifying cases of B-CLL, and it is now apparent that similarities among Ig rearrangements between patients may give important clues to the or...

Objectives: Diagnosis of chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL/SLL) depends on specific immunophenotype of select antigens and their characteristic density. However, reports detailing how the expression of specific antigen changes over time of disease course are sparse. Methods: We identified 37 CLL/SLL with initial and follow-up samples studied by flow cytometry. Express...

Simultaneous targeting of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt pathway increases arsenic trioxide (ATO)-dependent cytotoxicity of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells, whereas it has no significant effects on normal lymphocytes. Combinations of ATO with small molecules that target PI3K and/or Akt may provide a novel approach for the treatment of CLL.

We performed genomic profiling using multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA) in 54 cases with suspected or advanced chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). MLPA detected abnormalities when the percentage of mutated cells was greater than approximately 35%. Loss of 9p21 CDNK2A/B was revealed. MLPA is an economically attractive, powerful tool in trial-based, centralized risk-assessmen...

The diagnosis and management of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is reviewed, including the basic aspects of epidemiology, molecular biology, and cytogenetics with clinical relevance. The importance of immunophenotype in the differential diagnosis of other lymphoproliferative disorders related to CLL, staging, prognostic factors, promising new drugs, and approaches is summarized.

CLL is characterized by the gradual accumulation of malignant lymphocytes in the bone marrow, blood, lymph nodes, liver, and spleen. Thus, the major clinical features are the sequelae of bone marrow failure and the compressive syndromes that result from gross enlargement of lymphoid organs. In addition, CLL is associated with humoral and cell-mediated immunodeficiencies as well Chronic Lymphocy...

We compared the sensitivity of bone marrow biopsy to blood flow cytometry in detecting minimal residual disease (MRD) in 29 patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in clinical remission after treatment. These results demonstrate that flow cytometry is more sensitive than bone marrow biopsy in detecting MRD and in predicting relapse in CLL.
