A novel esterase gene (estSL3) was cloned from the Alkalibacterium sp. SL3, which was isolated from the sediment of soda lake Dabusu. The 636-bp full-length gene encodes a polypeptide of 211 amino acid residues that is closely related with putative GDSL family lipases from Alkalibacterium and Enterococcus. The gene was successfully expressed in E. coli, and the recombinant protein (rEstSL3) was...

Low temperature stress are the most important environmental stresses that limit the growth and yield of tomato plants. In this study, two tomato varieties, Peto Meck and CaljN3 were exposed to cold stress (8 oC) after four weeks of growth and sampled at five times of 2, 5, 24, 72, 144 hours after treatments. The expression of transcription factors SlNAC1 and CBF1 with Real-Time qRT-PCR method a...

Solaris is a new disease tolerant cultivar increasingly cultivated in cool climate regions. In order to explore the winemaking processes' potential to make different styles of Solaris wines, the effects of different pre-fermentation treatments (direct press after crushing, whole cluster press, cold maceration, and skin fermentation) on the volatile profile, chemical, and sensory properties of S...

Psychrophiles are extremophilic bacteria or archaea which are cold-loving, having an optimal temperature for growth at about 158C or lower, a maximal temperature for growth at about 208C and a minimal temperature for growth at 08C or lower. Psychrotrophs are cold-tolerant bacteria or archaea that have the ability to grow at low temperatures, but have optimal and maximal growth temperatures abov...

Calreticulin is an abundant endo/sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+-binding protein. To investigate whether calreticulin (CRO1) is involved in the cold-stress response in rice, a transgenic plant was constructed. The transcriptional level was decreased within 30 min and recovered within 2 h of a cold treatment. The calreticulin protein was shifted from a soluble fraction to an insoluble fraction by co...

In Hokkaido, northern Japan, soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] crops are damaged by cold weather. Chilling temperatures result in the appearance of cracking seeds (CS) in soybean crops, especially those grown in eastern and northern Hokkaido. Seed coats of CS are severely split on the dorsal side, and the cotyledons are exposed and frequently separated. CS occurrence causes unstable production b...

Nitrosomonas cryotolerans ATCC 49181 is a cold-tolerant marine ammonia-oxidizing bacterium isolated from seawater collected in the Gulf of Alaska. The high-quality complete genome contains a 2.87-Mbp chromosome and a 56.6-kbp plasmid. Chemolithoautotrophic modules encoding ammonia oxidation and CO2 fixation were identified.

Adaptive responses to thermal stress in poikilotherms plays an important role in determining competitive ability and species distributions. Amino acid substitutions that affect protein stability and modify the thermal optima of orthologous proteins may be particularly important in this context. Here, we examine a set of 2,770 protein-coding genes to determine if proteins in a highly invasive he...

Illumina MiSeq shotgun sequencing technology was used to sequence the genomes of two novel sub-Antarctic Williamsia species, designated strains 1135 and 1138. The estimated genome sizes for strains 1135 and 1138 are 5.99 Mb and 6.08 Mb, respectively. This genome sequence information will aid in understanding the lipid metabolic pathways of cold-tolerant Williamsia species.
