UNLABELLED Objective : There are few reports on outcome following flexor tendon repair of the hand in zone 5. We hypothesized that early mobilization of the fingers is possible if the suture site of repaired tendon is strong enough. The aim of this study was to assess the results of flexor tendon repair in this zone using modified Kessler method reinforced by peripheral running suture and a pos...

The repair of flexor tendons (zones I and II) is a technique-intensive surgical undertaking. It requires a strong understanding of the anatomy of the tendon sheath and the normal relationship between the pulleys and the flexor digitorum superficialis and flexor digitorum profundus tendons in the digit. Meticulous exposure, careful tendon retrieval, and atraumatic repair are extremely important,...

Haemangiomas developing in the hand in relation to tendon and the tenosynovium (tendon sheath) are very rare. To our knowledge only three cases have been described arising in relation to the tenosynovium of the tendons of the hand, only one of which showed infiltration of the underlying tendon. We report the case of a 16-year-old right hand dominant student who presented to her family doctor wi...

MM Al-Qattan, HM Clarke, V Bowen. Conservative management of transverse partial flexor digitorum profundus tendon lacerations in zone 2. Can J Plast Surg 1995;3(3):157-160. The experience with six patients managed conservatively following transverse partial flexor digitorum profundus tendon lacerations in zone 2 is presented. Four patients who were mobilized using elastic traction experienced n...

The compliance of elastic elements allows muscles to dissipate energy safely during eccentric contractions. This buffering function is well documented in animal models but our understanding of its mechanism in humans is confined to non-specific tasks, requiring a subsequent acceleration of the body. The present study aimed to examine the behaviour of the human triceps surae muscle-tendon unit (...

There are few reported cases of flexor tendon sheath ganglion arising from the A2 pulley. We report a case of a flexor tendon sheath ganglion in a 17-year old female who presented with pain, triggering and a swelling at the base of her right ring finger. During the excision biopsy, a ganglion measuring 0.5×0.8×0.4 cm in size was removed from the A2 pulley area.

Volar locking plate (VLP) fixation has become the standard surgical treatment for distal radius fractures. However, flexor tendon rupture is one of the major complications following volar plating. This detailed review on the anatomy and morphology of the volar distal radius might facilitate appropriate placement of the volar plate and thereby avoid flexor tendon rupture. We introduce safe and s...

Treatment of septic flexor tenosynovitis at the hand requires significant hospital resources in terms of operative time and subsequent management of tendon irrigation. Delayed recovery or treatment failure may require re-irrigation and drainage. This may be due to failure to adequately irrigate the entire flexor sheath. We describe a method of closed tendon sheath irrigation which is simple to ...
