Incorporating biphenyls as co-monomers in electron-deficient diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) conjugated polymers enables widening the optical band gap to 1.70 eV. Power conversion efficiencies of 3.7-5.7% and high open-circuit voltages of 0.80-0.93 V are obtained in solar cells based on these wide band gap DPP polymers.

Dye-sensitized solar cells fabricated by using a novel metal-free alkoxysilyl carbazole as a sensitizing dye and a Co(3+/2+)-complex redox electrolyte exhibited light-to-electric energy conversion efficiencies of over 12% with open-circuit photovoltages higher than 1 V by applying a hierarchical multi-capping treatment to the photoanode.

A series of benzotrithiophene-containing random terpolymers for polymer solar cells is reported. Through variations of the two other components in the terpolymers, the absorption profile and the frontier energy levels are optimized and maximum power conversion efficiencies are nearly doubled (5.14%) relative to the parent alternating copolymer.

A new form of hybrid carbon-based thin film was prepared via a pyridine chemical vapour deposition method. The as-obtained films consist of agglomerated flowerlike graphene nanowhiskers embedded in a uniform matrix of amorphous carbon. Schottky solar cells made from the hybrid films and n-type silicon show conversion efficiencies of approximately 1% under AM 1.5 illumination.

We report a ZnO interfacial layer based on an environmentally friendly aqueous precursor for organic photovoltaics. Inverted PCDTBT devices based on this precursor show power conversion efficiencies of 6.8-7%. Unencapsulated devices stored in air display prolonged lifetimes extending over 200 hours with less than 20% drop in efficiency compared to devices based on the standard architecture.

We introduce an ultrathin donor-acceptor solar cell composed entirely of inorganic nanocrystals spin-cast from solution. These devices are stable in air, and post-fabrication processing allows for power conversion efficiencies approaching 3% in initial tests. This demonstration elucidates a class of photovoltaic devices with potential for stable, low-cost power generation.
